barriers of bigotry have
crumbled. With few excep-
tions, Jews can reside, study,
work and play where they
wish.
Yet, rather than revel in the
freedom to practice their
faith, Jews rebel against the
heritage of their forebears.
They forsake education in
Jewish religion, culture and
language. They relegate the
basics of Jewish observance —
dietary laws, Sabbath,
holidays and mikvah — to the
realm of the Orthodox. They
eschew authentic Judaism for
Jewish-flavored liberal
universalism. They grow ig-
norant, and arrogant in their
ignorance.
Many Jews live, in fact, as
functional gentiles. It is no
surprise that they take non-
Jewish marriage partners.

Is Criticized
It is with great dismay that

we note your devoting the
first page of The Jewish News
Aug. 7 for clear emphasis of a
passing, insignificant minori-
ty: New Jewish Agenda. Is,;
that more important than the
issue of arms control that
threatens the very existence
of Israel, or does that news
item interest more people
than the status of the loan
guarantee — put on pages
34-36 respectively?
If in the opinion of The
Jewish News that item is so
relevant and significant why
not use the editorial page?
We feel that you may en-
danger your value if you
become the indirect exponent
of either the right or left.

t isn't every day that the
namesakes of a radical
Nation of Islam leader
join up with a group of Jews.
But it happened this week,
when Temple Beth El's so-
cial action committee offi-
cially adopted the all-black
Malcolm X Academy in
Detroit.
The project began when a
social action committee
member read a story about
the academy and was im-
pressed by the views of its
principal. He decided to visit
the school and returned to
give a positive report to the
social action committee
members.
The group then decided to
adopt the school, providing
the students with new op-
portunities (one proposal is
to provide tutors) and in-
viting them to join in ac-
tivities at the temple.
The first joint project was a
book drive. Members of the
temple's social action com-
mittee collected more than
600 books for students at
Malcolm X Academy. The
books were donated during a
luncheon, provided by a
temple member, for the
committee and Malcolm X
students and staff.
Social action committee
chairman Bobbi Charnas
has been impressed by the
caliber of both students and
teachers at the school, and is
surprised that it is now the

center of such virulent con-
troversy.
White residents of the
Detroit-Dearborn area hav7
protested plans by the
Malcolm X Academy to
relocate to their area.
"My son couldn't believe
it," she said of the protest.
"He was actually laughing,
because those children are in
no way threatening."
Mrs. Charnas said future
programs between the social
action committee and the
academy will involve both
youth and adults.

Israel Airlifts
Aid Zagreb

Tel Aviv (JTA) — An
Israeli air force Hercules,
transport plane flew some 15
tons of medical and human-
itarian aid to the Croatian
capital of Zagreb and
returned home without hav-
ing switched off its engines
in between flights.
But the plane was unable
to continue on to Bosnia-
Herzegovina, as the airfield
in Sarajevo was closed after
a British mercy plane was
shot at by snipers while
taking off.
Knesset member Yossi
Sarid of the Meretz bloc, whc
had sworn to get to the Bos-
nian capital after being
turned away last week, ac-
companied the flight but was
again unable to complete his
personal niission.
