And a man not married by age 40 is much less likely to ever marry than his female coun- terpart. ' What the studies don't indi- cate, however, is the growing per- 1 centage of people who aren't `) delaying marriage — but con- sciously deciding against it. As hard as it may be for many mothers to accept, "singling" has emerged as a lifestyle alternative _ equal to marriage, not a prelude, holding pattern or affliction. Certainly, single professionals enjoy greater freedom to do what they want, eat what they like, live as they please and buy what they wish — without getting a sec- ond opinion. "Being single or married does not determine a person's happi- ness," maintains Dr. Cynthia Voelz, a clinical psychologist in Maryland. Yet try telling that cto parents who feel it's their pre- rogative — or obligation — to steer their adult children into mar- riage. For dealing with people who confuse settling down with being happy, Dr. Voelz suggests this al- ,ternative to rehashing dating de- (-- bacles or replaying the same old debates: "Explain there are many ways you seek and find fulfill- `-‘ ment in your life." Fulfillment, rather than hap- piness, is the key, adds Dr. Th Raznick. "When you are fully centered — by that I mean have '-- - sense of balance and personal i----- contentment — this is going to be a non-issue." However, many singles pick up or share their mothers' inse- curities about being unmarried because they lack satisfaction I _ with other areas of their lives. -- Wondering "maybe something is wrong with me," a self-doubting 1 single might take extreme mea- sures to prove there isn't. Look- ing to someone other than oneself for personal fulfillment is "dan- li warns Dr. Raznick: "Set- -ding for a relationship not in the person's best interest may ad- ' dress one problem, but lead to many more serious ones." No matter how comfortable = single people are with their per- sonal lives and independent sta- cj tus, Dr. Raznick acknowledges that parental pressure to mar- ' ry often becomes a major issue. In his work with single clients, he has found all parties can ben- :, efit by addressing the issue head- on. The daughter or son must re- sist being pulled into the parents' anxiety. "Explain what you're do- ing with your life," Dr. Raznick says, stressing that self-deft. tion and exploration can offer rich personal rewards as well. "If par- ents realize their child is in con- trol of his or her life and making wise choices, that will allay fears and quiet their anxieties." 0 i MC's available for your next party: • Adult & 6th Grade Dance Classes 410 Persoal Checks & Cash )) —h.
