commit to intervention; the
other is to determine thli
best means of intervention
—whether the U.S. should,
act in consultation with the
United Nations, or other'
allies, or alone.
But if we are to think ef
ourselves as a decent and o
moral people, the U.S. must
respond. Not to wage war
but to ensure that the Red
Cross and other relief agen- •
cies can have access to
prisoners of war, refuges
and the other human
casualties of bloodshed.
No, we cannot put an end i
to every war on earth. But as
the world's only superpower,,i
we must find a middle
ground between engagingvi
our military and looking the
other way when war crime
are committed.
Hitler learned a valuable
lesson when the St. Louis,
was forced to return toil
Europe: no one cared about ,
the fate of the Jews. Once he
knew that, he proceeded'
with his Final Solution.
If we have learned
anything from the tragedy
we call the Holocaust, it is
that rationales for non-
involvement and even sym-
pathetic rhetoric are ngto
enough. If "Never Again" is
more than a slogan, it means4
that we take action.
Let our leaders decide on
the best form of action. But
let us insist that they act,
quickly and decisively.,
Otherwise, we will have no
better response to our chil- •
dren's and grandchildren's
question — how could you let
this happen? —than our
parents had for us. ❑

Bar-Ilan Drive
Is Dinner Focus

The international drive to
absorb and integrate Russian!
and Ethiopian students now
on campus will be the focus of
Bar-Ilan University's dinner
Sept. 9 at Adat Shalom
Synagogue. The dinner will 4
also mark the 40th anniver-
sary of the University's finan-si
cial founding in Detroit.
The Detroit Jewish corn-
munity has taken the lead in
Bar-Ilan's national drive to
create scholarship funding.
Since March 1991, more than
130 students have been.
"adopted" by Detroiters. Such
an adoption includes tuition, ry
housing, a monthly living
allowance, tutorial, the ser- I
vices of a social worker, and a
big brother/big sister mentor.
For reservations and infor-
mation, call the Bar-Ilan
University office, 423-4550.
