guidance and support," she
aid. "Sometimes people
need someone they can call
to give them encourage-
ment."
One mother and her 18-
month-old baby found an
apartment to rent when she
was able to juggle the securi-
y deposit requirement, Ms.
Haron said.
"We were able to act as
facilitators. If you don't have
a home, transportation and a
job, and possibly lack some
life skills, you'd be scrambl-
ing, too," she said.
Another mother and small
boy were able to move into
one of the apartments
managed by the property
management company after
the owner made the pay-
ment arrangement affor-
dable for her.
Temple Israel will host

T
he West Bloomfield
political scene has
calmed considerably
since the defeat of township
supervisor Sandra Draur
and most of the slate of can-
didates she endorsed for
township positions.
Local candidates were
engaged in a bitter race fill-
ed with mudslinging and ac-
cusations. And Ms. Draur
had publicly asked residents
o vote for candidates runn-
ing under the "people over
politics" label she had coin-
ed.
But voters did not agree
with Ms. Draur's plan. In-
stead, they selected
newcomer Geraldine Hood,
who will run against
Democrat Roberta Boyle in
the November general elec-
tion.
"She was a tough can-
didate, and an incumbent,
.and I was unknown to
township politics, but people
wanted a change and we
gave them a candidate that
offered that choice," Ms.
Hood said.
And with the exception of
attorney Michael Alan
Schwartz, who is running for
trustee, the candidates Ms.
Draur endorsed lost their
primary bids.
Now focus has turned to
three Democratic trustee
candidates running against
the four Republicans who
earned spots on the
November ballot during the
primary.
Democratic candidates for
trustee include Richard
Barr, Albert Holtz and An-
thony Spokojny. These
Democrats have been
waiting to see which of the
13 Republican candidates
would be their opponents.

eral election. Joining the in-
cumbents were Mr.
Schwartz and Marc
Shulman.
Historically, Democrats
have not won races in West
Bloomfield but -that does not
bother these candidates.
With the defeat of the "peo-
ple over politics" platform,
Democrats in West Bloom-
field think they may have a
fair shot at getting elected to
the township board.
"I think West Bloomfield
is more Republican, but re-
cently no Democrats have
run serious campaigns," Mr.
Spokojny said. "Therefore,
there is an unjustified fear. I
am going to try to convince
people to support me as a
Democrat."
Each Democrat said he
entered the race because
West Bloomfield needs good
government and each is
committed to the township.
Because their Republican
opponents have been in the
limelight with the primary,
the Democrats are anxious
to get their names and posi-
tions on issues known in the
community.
Mr. Holtz said he will be
knocking on doors and
speaking publicly. Mr.
Spokojny is going to try to
develop name recognition.
