BIRMINGHAM CHRYSLER PLYMOUTH
DECLARES THAT SUMMER HAS OFFICIALLY BEGUN.
Now is the time to buy or lease a
Lebaron Convertible.

even citing what he had
said.
Saying that the Arab
world not being ready for
democracy, he explained,
stemmed from his views that
the choice in such elections
may be between Islamic
fundamentalism and a
secular despot.
Donna Dees, a CBS News
spokesperson, said Dan
Rather has "an exemplary
record on Middle East
coverage. He must be doing
something right if both sides
° complain about him occa-
sionally."
Of the ADC's request that
CBS explain the ap-
propriateness of its news
personnel fund-raising for a
partisan group, Ms. Dees
said its news staff is "free to
moderate on any topic. This
2 does not compromise their
objectivity."

'Nazi Apologist'
In AJCongress?

One hopes that Alexander
Cockburn has a terrific
sense of humor since little
else can benignly explain his
latest off-the-wall column in
the Nation.
Mr. Cockburn writes that
the American Jewish Con-
gress's Congress Monthly
has, "on at least one occa-
sion . . . openly promoted
Nazi apologetics."
His evidence is a
May/June 1990 article by
Edward Alexander, a Uni-
versity of Washington pro-
) fessor, who referred to
"every exploded fiction
D about the Holocaust — rang-
ing from the notion that not
only Jews but also Poles,
Gypsies, Communists and
homosexuals were chosen by
the Nazis for annihilation."
From his home in Seattle,
Professor Alexander said he
had been writing about the
distinction between Nazi
efforts to exterminate
"every last Jew" and to in-
discriminately murder
members of other groups.
The professor has tangled
with Mr. Cockburn before.
In a December, 1989, Seattle
Times op-ed, he noted that
among the "preposterous
falsehoods" offered by Mr.
Cockburn was the notion
that Jews were "the chosen
people ... of genocide." He
also recalled that in 1986
Mr. Cockburn had defended
author Gore Vidal's calling
Jews "fifth-columnists" by
stating that "the Nazis ap-
proved of Zionism."
Mr. Cockburn, incidental-
ly, seems to be losing his
readership even in non-
Jewish circles. ❑
