New Program
For Day Schools
New York (JTA) — A na-
tional Parent Education
Program will be introduced
for the first time in Jewish
day schools nationwide this
year.
The program is being
'aunched at a time when
more and more parents are
turning to all-day Jewish
schools for their children's
education.
They cite religion, inter-
marriage and discontent
with public school education
as reasons for enrollment.
Yet many parents
withdraw their children
from day schools and enroll
them in public schools long
before the day school edu-
cation can have a lasting
impact.
When parents feel they are
a part of the school's extend-
ed family, they are more
likely to work with the
school, support their chil-
dren's interest in Judaism,
and facilitate that expres-
sion at home, according to
Torah Umesorah.
The Parent Education
Program has been launched
in five schools so far.
Rabbi Eli Gewirtz, pro-
gram coordinator, said the
program has enormous
potential for changing the
community.
As parents choose to keep
their children in a day
school, the program will
reap another benefit.
While more than 50 per-
..cent of Jews intermarry to-
day, the statistic drops to 7
percent among those who
complete their day school
education, according to
Torah Umesorah.
Merhav Named
New Director
Jerusalem (JTA) —
Reuven Merhav, formerly
director general of the
Israeli Foreign Ministry and
a onetime Israeli consul
general in Hong Kong, has
been appointed director gen-
eral of the Ministry of Im-
migration and Absorption.
Mr. Merhav told reporters
he was undertaking the
assignment "with great fear
and trepidation," given the
historic nature of the
challenge.
Aliyah figures for July
rose slightly, raising hope
here that immigration from
the former Soviet Union
may be starting to pick up
again. In July, the rate of
aliyah from the former
Soviet Union rose 25 percent
from the previous month.
