Fifteen young people are
working with and learning
about the Jewish community
of Detroit this summer. The
14 college students and one
graduate student are intern-
ing at several area Jewish
communal agencies through
Project Join (Jewish Occupa-
tional Intern Program).
Supervised by Jewish Voca-
tional Service, JOIN provides
students with the opportuni-
ty to experience possible
careers in Jewish communal
service and to recruit
educated young people to
work in the community as
professionals or volunteer
leaders. The project, which
helps students focus on their
educational and professional
goals, places interns in agen-
cies for eight weeks according
to their interests.
Organized by the JVS staff,
the seminars include over-
views of area agencies, tours
of local facilities and discus-
sion of current issues. They
include in-depth discussions
of the history as well as cur-
rent and future challenges in
the Jewish community.
Project JOIN is funded in
part by the Allied Jewish
Campaign allocation to
Jewish Vocational Service,
participating agency budgets
and a three-year Van Dusen
Endowment challenge grant
from the Kresge Foundation
and the Community Founda-
tion for Southeastern Michi-
gan.
The 1992 Project JOIN in-
terns are: Amy Berris (Jewish
