AROUND TOWN Young Israel's baseball and softball league attracts scores of players - Tuesday nights at Thompson Middle School. Tuesday nights during the summer at Thompson Middle School are filled with the sounds of the pop of a ball hitting the pocket of a first baseman's mitt, shouts of infielders calling for the relay and the voices of coaches giving encouragement. It's the Young Israel League, and it's an opportunity for boys and girls to learn the games of baseball and softball while playing them. Parents spend a part of each session teaching some fundamentals before the action heats up and teams compete. For many, it's the joy of getting that first hit, or the feeling that they are part of a team. For all, though, it's a chance to run, to throw, to catch and to hit. Most important, it's a chance to have fun. Elisha Kroner swings and hits a single. Miriam Liederman gets batting instruction from umpire Miriam Huffstutter. Sandra Cohen gets ready to make a throw.
