welve Oaks Mall
celebrated its 15th
anniversary by
creating a pops orchestra,
consisting of 20 local high
school students. The
students performed at the
mall last weekend and each
will receive a $1,000 schol-
arship upon high school
graduation.
Evan Hirschelman of
Novi High School and Cary
Heller and Joe Sachs of
West Bloomfield High
School were part of the
ensemble of young per-
formers.
Cary Heller, 17, a senior at
West Bloomfield High
School, plays in the school
band and marching band. He
has been playing the
trumpet for 10 years. "I love
playing," he said.
Cary also noted that he
and Joe Sachs are part of the
JC Jazz Combo that plays
private parties. "Oh, you can
mention that we are looking
for work," said the young
performer.

CAPITOL STEPS
The satirical ensemble
Capitol Steps will return to
Detroit on Sept. 1 to Tam
O'Shanter Country Club to
benefit the Anti-Defamation
League.
"We had to bring them
back," said Roger Fenton
in a Tam O'Shanter
newsletter. "People have
been asking for them. With
this year's presidential cam-
paign providing material,
they should be absolutely
hilarious."
Some of the ADL organ-
ziers include: Norman
Beitner, president; Barry
Goodman, chair of the ADL
appeal; Leonard and Lin-
da Sahn, Steve and Patti
Tapper, event chairs; and
Chuck and Linda Sober-
man, honorary chairs.
Tickets are $125 per per-
son. For more information
call Jill Briggs, ADL devel-
opment director, at 355-
3730.

FREEDOM TOUR
At 13, Whitney Lakin, a
ninth grade student at
Detroit Country Day School,
is the youngest of 20 area
teens traveling throughout
the south for the next few
weeks on the Freedom Tour.
This is Whitney's first ex-
perience of a political nature
and her first visit to the
south.
On the program, sponsored
by the Detroit Interfaith
Round Table of Christians,
Jews and Muslims,
youngsters will tour civil
rights monuments and learn
about the black struggle for
equality. They will also
learn about the struggles of
Hispanic and native Ameri-
cans.
