FRIDAY, AUGUST 7, 1992

Hundreds of Detroiters are
hitting the Israeli shores on
Jewish Federation trips to
Israel.
More than 500 people have
signed up for the Michigan
Miracle Mission, April 18-28,
1993, which now is filling a
second Boeing 747, to fly
direct from Detroit to Tel
Aviv. The non-fund-raising
trip launched from Michigan
is open to individuals and
families with children age 13
and older.
The 10-day trip will cost
$1,993 per person. A $500
deposit will reserve a spot in
the mission, and participants
who pay in full by Nov. 16,
1992, will receive a $50 dis-
count on the per-person cost.
The trip is sponsored by the
Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit with the
cooperation of The Jewish
News in celebration of its
50th anniversary, as well as
many organizations and con-
gregations throughout
Michigan.
The Prime Minister's Mis-
sion, Aug. 23-31, will give
each of its participants an op-
portunity to witness a unique
moment in Jewish history:
the renaissance of the Jews of
the former Soviet Union.
Led by Joel Tauber, na-
tional UJA chairman, con-
tributors of $100,000 or more
to the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign will receive an insider's
look at the current situation
in Moscow and learn about
the impact on the Jews in the
former Soviet Union.
Meetings are planned with
Russian President Boris
Yeltsin and Mikhail
Gorbachev.
In Israel, participants will
meet with leaders of the
government, including Prime
Minister Yitzhak Rabin and
President Chaim Herzog.
The 19th annual Interna-
tional Leadership Reunion
will be held in Paris, Sept.
13-16. The program, which is
for contributors of $250,000 to
the Allied Jewish Campaign,
will include a chance to ex-
perience the joys of Paris in-
tellectually and Jewishly.
Detroiters will have the op-
portunity to visit Turkey on
the UJA President's Mission
to Turkey and Israel, Sept.
13-23.
The mission, which is open
to contributors of $10,000 or
more to the 1993 Campaign,
is being organized by Shirley
and Merle Harris, Detroit
chairmen; Dr. Owen Perlman,
Midwest regional recruit-
ment chairman; and Mr.
Tauber.

The President's Mission
will provide an opportunity
for major givers to explore
Jewish roots in a country that
was once a vital center of
Jewish life at the crossroads
of Europe and Asia. The
three-day Turkey pre-mission
will include visits to historic
Jewish sites and oppor-
tunities to meet and socialize
with leaders of the Istanbul
Jewish community. A scholar
on Jewish life in Turkey will
accompany the group. Presi-
dent Herzog will host the mis-
sion in Israel, and par-
ticipants also will meet with
the prime minister.
Young leaders will par-
ticipate in the Oct. 21-Nov. 1
Chazak Mission. After
visiting Riga and Moscow in
the former USSR, they will
come to Israel for a full
schedule of tours, visits with

new immigrants, meetings
with government officials,
shopping and more.
The Chazak Mission, which
is chaired locally by David
Victor and Stacey Crain and
regionally by Lynn Sachse, is
open to single and married
men and women age 25-45.
Cost of the mission is $2,100
with a minimum pledge of
$800 to the 1992 Allied
Jewish Campaign.
Parents, children and
grandparents also are seeing
Israel on UJA Family Mis-
sions. They include special
youth programs designed to
meet the needs of children
from 7 to adult.
Co-sponsored by UJA, the
Hatikvah Summer Singles,
Prime Minister's, President's
Family and Chazak missions
include round-trip air fare
from New York, deluxe ac-
commodations (double oc-
cupancy), transportation,
guides, gratuities and most
meals. Israel-only options
also may be available.
Participants will travel
throughout the Jewish state,
where they will observe reset-
tlement efforts on behalf of
Soviet and Ethiopian Jews
and meet with recently arriv-
ed immigrants.

missions, call Leonard
