The traditional Jewish
outlook has been that the
Temple was destroyed for our
sins. Few Jews feel that this
is true about the Holocaust
. . . the relationship of Tisha
B'Av to the Holocaust is not
yet settled."
For all its sadness, however,
Tisha B'Av also signifies eter-
nal hope. The destruction of
the Second Temple led to the
birth of the Talmud and a pro-
lific period of rabbinic Jewish
thought. The destruction of
European Jewry led to the
establishment of the State of
Israel and the return of the
Jewish people to its
homeland.

Plant Explodes
Near Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Two peo-
ple were killed and some 45
injured in a massive blast at
a heavily guarded munitions
plant just north of Tel Aviv.
The explosion occurred
minutes after 8 a.m. at an
Israel Military Industries
complex at Nof Yam on the
coastal road between Tel
Aviv and Haifa just outside
Herzliya. It was first re-
, ported to have occurred dur-
ing an experiment in an
underground bunker con-
taining what was described
as a "very large store" of
high explosives.
But later reports said it
happened during routine
operations.
Twenty-five of the wound-
ed were workers at the
plant, and another 20 were
residents of nearby houses
and passers-by. Most sus-
tained medium to light in-
juries and all were treated at
a number of hospitals in the
area.
