Amsterdam Shul
Wins Case

Amsterdam (JTA) — The
Amsterdam Ashkenazi con-
gregation has won its case
against the Jewish
Historical Museum of
Amsterdam over possession
of three valuable items of
Judaica.
The Dutch Ministry of
Culture had previously rul-
ed that the three items,
dating to the 13th, 17th and
18th centuries, could not be
removed from the building
by their owner without the
express permission of the
museum.
But the Dutch Council of
State, the country's highest
legal authority, agreed with
the synagogue, which had
argued that the ruling ran
contrary to the principles of
religious freedom. The coun-
cil overturned the ministry's
decision.
The objects are a 17th-
century Torah shrine in the
Great Synagogue, which is
now part of the museum, a
large silver menorah do-
nated to the congregation in
1753 by the Rintel family,
and a 13th-century holiday
prayerbook that was do-
nated to the congregation by
Uri Phoebus Halevy in 1669.
The Culture Ministry had
ruled at the initiative of the
Jewish Museum that these
objects were so important to
Dutch culture that they
must never be moved, not
even temporarily.

Rabinovich
Heads Talks

Jerusalem (JTA) — One of
Israel's leading academic
Arabists, Professor Itamar
Rabinovich, will head its ne-
gotiating team in the peace
talks with Syria.
Mr. Rabinovich's ap-
pointment was announced
by Prime Minister Yitzhak
Rabin at the weekly Cabinet
meeting. He takes over from
Yosef Ben-Aharon, former
Prime Minister Yitzhak
Shamir's closest aide.
Mr. Rabinovich, 49, rector
of Tel Aviv University, is a
specialist in the modern his-
tory of the Middle East, with
particular reference to
Syria.
Top government sources
welcomed his appointment
as "representing the chang-
ed thinking in Jerusalem on
peacemaking." These
sources said he would in-
troduce a "new tone" into
the bilateral negotiations
with Syria, which have fail-
ed to make tangible progress
thus far.
