Cheryl Collis
Sports Hall Of Fame
Awards Scholarships
The Michigan Jewish
Sports Hall of Fame has an-
nounced the winners of its
1992 Male and Female High
School Athletic Scholarship
Award. Cheryl Collis of West
Bloomfield and Todd Helfman
of Oak Park each received
$500 toward college tuition
for their exceptional athletic
and scholastic achievements.
Ms. Collis, an 18-year-old
graduate of Groves High
School, was captain of the
varsity pompon team for
three years, a junior varsity
and varsity cheerleader, a
member of the varsity bowl-
ing team for two years and
participated in track,
volleyball, softball and soccer
outside of school. Ms. Collis
has a 3.958 grade point
average and plans to study
journalism and foreign
language at Indiana
University.
Mr. Helfman is an 18-year-
old graduate of Berkley High
School. He played golf for four
years and was on the varsity
team for three of those years.
In 1990 Helfman was award-
ed "most improved player,"
and in 1991 he was team cap-
tain, voted "most valuable
player," placed fifth at the
regional tournament and
went to state competition. Mr.
Helfman has a 3.3 grade
point average and plans to at-
tend Eastern Michigan
University to study medicine.
Scholarship candidates
were nominated by their high
school athletic coach and
counselor. The winners were
selected by a panel of
members from the MJSHF
board of directors. To be eligi-
ble, athletes must be 9-12th-
grade students competing in
recognized sports and in good
standing at their high school.
Winners of the 1992
athletic scholarship will be
honored at the annual Hall of
Fame Induction Banquet Nov.
9 at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek and a plaque, listing
their names, will be displayed
in the Hall of Fame at the
Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield.
The MJSHF, founded in
1985, helps foster Jewish
identity through athletics.
The Hall also awards a male
and female high school
athlete of the year, co-
sponsors the annual Hall of
Fame Games for the Jewish
developmentally disabled and
promotes and encourages
other athletic activities.
