he never would have remem-
bered that fact were it not for
his daughter, Stephanie.
"I'm a news junkie," Mr.
Techner said at first, listing
among his regular material
People magazine, the New
York Times and the Wall
Street Journal (though he in-
sists obituaries are not the
first thing he turns to). But
books? Well, he couldn't think
of a one.
Then Stephanie, 6, re-
minded him of the two books
they read together each;
night. First he reads her
book, then she reads one as.
he braids her hair. "We'rcf,
taking a class on how tg,
French braid," Mr. Techner
says. "Forty people are in thi,:
class. I'm the only man."
Stephanie's latest favorite
— maybe because getting
pierced ears is a hot topic in
the Techner household these
days — is called Earrings.
Mr. Techner called his
evening reading with Steph-
anie, "the most special time
of my day."
