Tell Me A Story
writer Mary Higgins Clark. c
"It's summer junk food for
English teachers," she ex-
plains.
In honor of a friend im-
mersed in corporate Ameri-
ca, Mrs. Moses recently
picked up two books called
Downshifting and The Pop-
corn Report. The latter de-
scribes trends in the nation.
DAVID TECHNER
c7
,
of Ira Kaufman Chapel, reads
at least 14 books a week. But
he never would have remem-
bered that fact were it not for
his daughter, Stephanie.
"I'm a news junkie," Mr.
Techner said at first, listing
among his regular material
People magazine, the New
York Times and the Wall
Street Journal (though he in-
sists obituaries are not the
first thing he turns to). But
books? Well, he couldn't think
of a one.
Then Stephanie, 6, re-
minded him of the two books
they read together each;
night. First he reads her
book, then she reads one as.
he braids her hair. "We'rcf,
taking a class on how tg,
French braid," Mr. Techner
says. "Forty people are in thi,:
class. I'm the only man."
Stephanie's latest favorite
— maybe because getting
pierced ears is a hot topic in
the Techner household these
days — is called Earrings.
Mr. Techner called his
evening reading with Steph-
anie, "the most special time
of my day."

Washington (JTA) —
Representatives of Jewish
groups met with Washing-
ton Mayor Sharon Pratt
ly to protest a proclamatie
she issued July 11 in hon._
of a national spokesman f-
the Nation of Islam.
One of the representati017
present said Ms. Kelly maki_P
it clear she meant only tg
praise Dr. Abdul Ali-c1
Muhammed for his loco;
work fighting AIDS an.- i
drug abuse and not to lee'
imate or encourage the amt
Semitic views he has
trumpeted.
But the Jewish leadgis
conveyed to the mayor tliiat
it was "impossible to discbn-
nect the good workg of
(Muhammed) from the
darker aspects of his pr'
gram and the Nation of
Islam's program, which
preach vilification of the
Jews" said Jeffrey Wein-
traub, director of the Wash-
