Dr. Arthur Feuer,
elped Survivors
Dr. Arthur Feuer, of Oak
ark, died Aug. 1. He was 80.
Dr. Feuer was born in
Austria, and fled Germany in
1936.
Dr. Feuer served as doctor of
ounsel to the German Con-
sulate General in Detroit
since 1957. In that capacity
he examined hundreds of sur-
vivors of the Nazi concentra-
tion camps to help them ob-
tain financial assistance and
ther aid from the West Ger-
man government.
In 1986, he was awarded
"est Germany's highest
vilian decoration, the Ser-
vice Cross, 1st Class, for his
work on behalf of Nazi vic-
ims. He was the only
onorary member of Shaarit
aplaytah, the organization
of Holocaust survivors.
He was the longtime presi-
dent of Americans for Pro-
ressive Israel Hashomer
atzair and a past board
nember of the Detroit Zionist

Gabriel Shamir, who with
his late brother, Maxim,
designed Israel's state
emblem, died of cancer in
Israel July 23. He was 83.
Born in Libau, Russia, Mr.
Shamir studied graphic arts
in Berlin. The brothers settl-
ed in Tel Aviv in 1935 where
they established the Eretz
Yisrael Association of
Graphic Designers.
In 1949, their proposal for
the State of Israel emblem
won first prize. The Menorah
with the two olive branches
and the name of Israel
became official.
In subsequent years, the
Shamir brothers won many
design competitions for
postage stamps, bank notes,
posters and government
medals. Mr. Shamir retired in
1981.
One of his last works, an
emblem, adorns a box of
hornets which will be launch-
ed into space in September as
part of a joint experiment by
NASA, The Israel Space
Agency, Tel Aviv University
and the Israel Aircraft In-
dustries.
Morris Schlussel,
Businessman
Morris Schlussel, of
Southfield, died August 1. He
was 81.
Mr. Schlussel owned and
operated Linwood-Tyler Shell,
Morry's Pure Service and was
a partner of Exhaust Systems
Warehouse. He was a lifetime
member of Congregation
Beth Abraham Hillel Moses
and the Louis Marshall Lodge
of B'nai B'rith.
He leaves his wife, Helen;
son, Michael of Southfield;
daughters and sons-in-law,
Nancy and Stephen Glasser,
Barbara and Barry Kranitz,
all of Farmington Hills; sister,
Sarah Silverstein; nine
grandchildren, two
