Max Berezin,
Businessman

Max Berezin, of Beachwood,
Ohio, formerly of Southfield,
died Aug. 1. He was 88.
Mr. Berezin was born in
Cincinnati, Ohio. He opened
Ms first ladies ready-to-wear
store in Defiance, Ohio, in
1929, and soon a second store
it Tiffin, Ohio. He and his
late wife Esther were
embers and officers in Beth
srael Temple in Fremont,
and the Inner-City
B'nai B'rith Lodge. Mr.
erezin lived in Southfield
from 1973 until 1989.
rHe is survived by a son and
daughter-in-law, Alec and
Marcia of Shaker Heights,
Ohio, daughters and son-in-
law, Joanne and Dr. Arnold
,uroff of Farmington Hills,
Judy Whiteman of Wheeling,
W.; nine grandchildren; four
great-grandchildren.

Harry Starr,
Harvard Pioneer

New York (JTA) — Harry
Starr, a pioneer in Jewish
gZudies at Harvard Univer-
sity and a lifelong supporter
of Jewish scholarly pursuits,
died July 25 in Gloversville,
N.Y. He was 92 and had
. .ben in failing health for
some time.
— Along with his lifelong
iend and colleague, Lucius
ttauer, a U.S. con-
gressman and patron of Jew-
•sh education, he helped
found the Lucius N. Littauer
Foundation in 1929, which
oprovided money for Jewish
studies programs at Harvard
mid other universities and
helped fund scientific
• research and fiction writing,
as well.
Mr. Starr served as secre-
tary and then as president of
the foundation from its
founding until 1985, when
he became chairman. He
was honorary chairman at
the time of his death.

Brisk Litovsk in Lithuania
in 1899, studied Hebrew in
Warsaw and received a
degree in engineering at the
Warsaw Polytechnic.
Mr. Hazan said in a recent
interview that his only re-
gret was that, at one mo-
ment in the 1950s, he had
told the Knesset that he had
two homelands — "the
Soviet Union and Israel."
He said he soon realized
that Jews had only one
homeland —the State of
Israel.

Rae Dalven,
Historian
New York (JTA) — Rae
Dalven, historian of Greek
Jews and Sephardic scholar,
died here July 27 at the age
of 87.
Ms. Dalven, a translator of
modern Greek poets, was
retired after serving as a
professor of English litera-
ture and department chair-
woman at Ladycliff College
in Highland Falls, N.Y.
At the time of her death,
she was completing a trans-
lation of the works of women
poets of Greece. Her other
publications include three
volumes of translated and
edited Greek poetry and two
plays.
In recent years, she
devoted herself to resear-
ching and writing about
Greece's two Jewish com-
munities, particularly the
community in Ioannina in
northern Greece, whose
members were virtually
eliminated by the Nazis dur-
ing World War II and whose
ancestors emigrated from
Palestine in around 300
BCE.
Ms. Dalven was also the
editor of "The Sephardic
Scholar," the journal of the
American Society of Sephar-
dic Studies, and a member of
the Board of Directors of the
American Friends of the
Jewish Museum in Greece.

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Ya'acov
• Hazan, described as the last
of the giants of the Socialist
-Zionist movement, died at
his home in Kibbutz
r Mishmar Ha'Emek last
week at the age of 93.
*- Mr. Hazan founded
Mapam, the left-wing
ok Zionist political party, as
„well as the Shomer Hatzair
and Kibbutz Artzi
-. movements.
Mr. Hazan was eulogized
briefly in the Knesset, with
a special memorial session to
0- be held at the end of the
shiva mourning period.

Killed In Crash

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
nephew of Israeli Foreign
Minister Shimon Peres was
one of two Israelis killed in
the weekend crash of a Thai
Airways Airbus in the
Himalayas.
Uzi Peres and Dr. Rafael
Sharon were among the 113
people aboard the plane who
were killed when it slammed
into a forested mountainside
in Nepal while enroute from
Bangkok, Thailand, to Kat-
mandu, Nepal.
