LOSE ALL THE WEIGHT YOU WANT!
about how the Jews of
Tiraspol wanted no part of
the civil strife that has
engulfed Trans-Dniester.
But he feared that would not
be possible. Both sides were
pressuring Jews to get in-
volved.
Because the Jews spoke
Russian, many ethnic
Romanians tended to lump
them with the ethnic Rus-
sians and Ukrainians, mak-
ing them the enemy-by-
association. Still other
Romanians saw the Jews as
allies in a common battle
against their Slavic op-
pressors.
Russians and Ukrainians,
possessed of a deep-seated,
historic anti-Semitism, also
mistrusted Jews, said Mr.
Vaisman. Yet they, too,
viewed Jews as potential
allies because of linguistic
and even cultural ties.
"The pressure is still there
and, unfortunately, some
Jews have become involved
in the fighting," said Mr.
Smukler. "Already, we
know of several cases of
Jews who have been killed,
but we have just one name;
Aron Chafirov, born in
1949."
I asked Mr. Smukler why
Jews would choose to get in-
volved in a war not of their
making, and in which they
stand to lose everything.
(
Why not just leave now and
head for Israel or the West?
"Why? Who knows why?
Why did Jews take part in
the Communist Revolution?
That almost killed all of us.
Maybe Jews are too stub-
born, slow learners," he re-
sponded.
And what about Mr.
Vaisman, who travels wide-
ly and has the sort of inter-
national connections that
would probably land him on
his feet should he choose to
bail out of Tiraspol. He has a
wife and 9-year-old son to
worry about, plus his older
daughter has already
emigrated to Israel.
"He would not leave
unless every other Jew left
first," said Mr. Smukler.
"He said to me, 'If I leave,
who will do the work?' "
Samuel Vaisman has pro-
ven himself to be a genuine
leader who foresaw the
future all too clearly.
Perhaps that's why he had
such a sad look about him.
But the accuracy with
which he predicted what has
come to pass — and because
Jews in Odessa, Moscow and
elsewhere with whom I
spoke last year made similar
predictions — leads me to
fear that the worst is yet to
come for the Jews of the
crumbling empire that was
once the Soviet Union. D

$42 Million Needed
To Restore Auschwitz
Oswiecim, Poland (JTA) —
The deputy director of the
Auschwitz museum told a
group of leading American
Jews and Catholics that the
facility needed an estimated
$42 million in order to carry
out essential restoration and
maintenance work.
The American delegation
was in Poland July 20-24 at
the invitation of the Polish
Episcopate for a series of
talks with church and
secular officials on inter-
religious initiatives and
Polish-Jewish ties.
"We have 150 buildings
(and) 250 ruins" to care for,
Krystyna Oleksy told the
interreligious delegation.
She said the $42 million fig-
ure came from a report
prepared by the Ronald S.
Lauder Foundation, which
has been working to
preserve the Auschwitz and
Birkenau death camps and
their collection of artifacts.
"For 47 years, the museum
was financed by the Polish
government. We are doing
our best, but there is not
enough money so that our
plans can be realized," Ms.
Oleksy said.
The Lauder Foundation is
hoping to obtain the funds
from Western European
governments, with half re-
quested from Germany.
In addition to planned
changes in the museum's
exhibitions — which will
reflect the largely Jewish
composition of Auschwitz-
q Birkenau victims — Ms.
Oleksy said maintenance
and conservation were ne-
cessities.
"We urgently need
heating, temperature and
humidity control."
Many of the exhibitions,
particularly the poignant
displays of belongings left by
Auschwitz victims, are in
danger of decay after nearly
50 years.
In addition to Auschwitz,
the American delegation
visited Warsaw, Cracow and
Czestochowa in what the
group described as "a
pilgrimage of faith, remem-
brance and reconciliation."
