LONG WEEK
EVERYTHING YOU
IMAGINE AND MORE...
Stockholm, located at Wah-
rendorffsgatan 3, is not far
from the center of town. This
imposing brick bulding, a na-
tional landmark, was erected
in 1870, the year that
Swedish Jews won full
equality.
The fact that they built a
sanctuary to seat 1,000 wor-
shippers is evidence of their
optimism for the future of
their community.
Inside, the sanctuary is im-
mense and striking, with
dramatic arches, ornately
carved wooden bimah and
balcony, a distinctive
menorah, and unusual
wooden brackets supporting
the ceiling.
It is here that American
born Rabbi Morton Narrowe
conducts services. Although
the huge sanctuary is often
not full, there's always a big
turnout on the Shabbat be-
fore the Nobel Prizes are
awarded, when Jewish Nobel
laureates are invited to the
service.
Besides the Great Syna-
gogue, where the services are
Conservative, there are also

Raoul Wallenbergs Torg,
very close to the Great Syna-
gogue, is named for the non-
Jewish Swedish diplomat who
went to Hungary during
World War II and managed to
save thousands of Hungarian
Jews from the death camps by
issuing them Swedish pass-
ports. Often he rescued them
dramatically and bravely as
they were about to be shipped
off to the camps.
This waterside square, nam-
ed in Mr. Wallenberg's honor
in 1987, is close to the area in
which he grew up.
As a child, he lived in an
apartment on Stranvagen,
the spacious waterfront drive
lined with stately buildings.
He worked for a trading com-
pany also located on Strand-
vagen before he left for the
Budapest assignment in
1943, never to return. After
the war, he mysteriously
vanished after he met with
Russian officials. It is
generally assumed he died in
the USSR, but his memory is
alive both in Sweden and
throughout the world.
Facing one side of the
Wallenberg square is the
