ON-THE-LAKE, ONT.)
10 framework was replaced with
stainless steel.
Recently restored, Lady
Liberty was a glorious sight
in the sunshine, and ap-
proaching her from the water
was the ideal way to ap-
preciate her beauty.
Ferries stop regularly at
both islands, so another ferry
was soon ready to take those
of us who got off at Liberty
Island on to nearby Ellis
Island. This was once the
main port of entry for new
citizens to the New World, in-
cluding thousands of Jews
from Eastern Europe.
Now it's the site of the Ellis
Island Immigration Museum,
the country's leading
museum dedicated to Amer-
ica's immigrant heritage and
the third largest museum in
New York City, where detail-
ed displays include many
photos and artifacts about
Jewish immigration.
There's so much to see in
this museum that my second
visit, like my first, was
fascinating but also a brief
teaser: I left determined to
return again soon. Back on
the boat, I enjoyed the sight
of the skyline of Lower Man-
hattan, so different from what
the immigrants saw, looming
--) larger as we approached.
Once again in Battery
Park, I made a slight detour
away from the waterfront to
visit several sites that are
reminders of the early Jewish
settlers who once lived here.
It was a brief walk from the
waterfront to Fraunces
Tavern at Broad and Pearl.
Not only is this the place
where George Washington
bid farewell to his officers in
1783, but it was once the
home of the Franks family,
part of the early Jewish com-
munity of New York.
Further along Broad at
Stone Street is the site of
Asher Levy's house; he was
one of the original Jewish set-
tlers who fought to be able to
stand guard and defend New
Amsterdam — before it
became New York; Jews were
at first prohibited from this
duty and instead, a tax was
levied on them.
Up the street at Broad and
South William, although no
sign of it remains, is the site
of the original Congregation
Shearith Israel, the first
synagogue in North America.
Back at the waterfront, I
hopped a bus and within
minutes was at the South
Street Seaport, the place
which combines history and
modernity. On the site of
what was once only the
Fulton Street Fish Market,
there's now an entire water-
front complex, complete with
