a telephone interview from
her Herzliya home.
Through a window, the
Israelis could observe the
tragedy unfolding in the
streets of the Olympic
Village. The hostages were
marched, hands tied behind
their backs, heads bent, to
the waiting helicopter the
terrorists had demanded.
"We saw everything. I saw it
with my own eyes," Roth
said.
"Everyone was scared,"
she added. "Nobody slept."
Again, a physician
prescribed sleeping pills — if
the terrorist action passed
without casualties, she
might run again. When she
awoke, she knew from the
others' faces that the 11
hostages were dead. They
were killed during the ter-
rorists' shootout with police
at a Munich airfield. Among
the casualties were her ven-
erated coach, Amitzur
Shapira.
Roth remembers few
details from the days after
the athletes' murder.
The Israelis, under heavy
protection, took part in a
memorial ceremony for the
slain athletes in the Olympic
stadium later that week.
"Then we went home," Roth
said. Dazed by the killings,
left without her coach, she
had no desire to compete
again in Munich.
Roth quit athletics until
her boyfriend — now her
husband, Peter
Shachamorov — lured her
back by jogging a few laps at
a track that carried no
memories of workouts with
Shapira. She went on to run
in the Asian Games, the
Maccabiah Games and the
1976 Olympics at Montreal.
"It was very good for
everyone to remember what
happened" at Munich.
Roth, who still holds
several Israeli track records,
teaches physical education
to teen-agers.
Despite the memories, she
watches the Olympics on
television every four years.
Israelis have learned how to
deal with such painful in-
cidents, she said. "We live
with it. In Israel, dangerous
things (can) happen all the
time."
Roth is asked frequently
about 1972.
"Everyone remembers it
because it was a very big
shock," she said.
This year Roth has ac-
cepted several invitations to
appear on Israeli televisions
programs about the Munich
Olympics.
"All the time I end up cry-
ing," she said. "Even after
20 years." ❑
