pass this up."
Kaufman moved here in
January 1990 and got into
her first major car wreck in
February. No one was hurt,
but she missed a day of
work. "I slid on a patch of ice
on the Lodge," she said. "I
just didn't know how to drive
in this weather."
Now that she is settled,
she plans to cover the Win-
ter and Summer Olympics
(which will now alternate
every two years), interna-
-, tional soccer, as well as spe-
cial feature projects.
She also is enjoying the
benefits of Detroit's Jewish
culture, which was lacking
in St. Petersburg, she said.
Kaufman attends syn-
agogue on holidays with her
family's friends who live in
Huntington Woods. "It's
nice to have the Jewish
community. Maybe I should
be more active, but I'm so
busy with my work. But you
still feel comfortable know-
ing there are other Jewish
people around," she said.
"When Passover comes, I
know I can go to any grocery
store and get all the things I
