The irony of this social
phenomenon is that while it
would seem that only the
most individualistic types
would live off the land for
months in Sri Lanka or the
Amazon, the post-Army trip
abroad is more an expression
of conformism than non-
conformism.
Many travelers stick close
to the Israeli chevre, or circle
of acquaintances, no matter
where they are. They find, to
their satisfaction, that sleep-
ing in a tent with their
buddies in the mountains of
Nepal reminds them of
sleeping in a tent with their
buddies on an Army exercise
in the Golan Heights.
"There's a very small pro-
portion of pioneers who open
up new travel routes and
find new places. These are
the non-conformists," said
Mr. Limon. "The rest are go-
ing because it's the thing to
do — their friends did it, so
they have to do it, too."
Occasionally there are
tragedies. In July of last
year, one Israeli was shot to
death and three others were
wounded after being taken
hostage on their houseboat
in Kashmir by Moslem ter-
rorists. (After days in cap-
tivity, and after refusing to
swear allegiance to Islam,
the Israelis jumped their
captors, took their rifles and
killed two of the terrorists in
the shootout.)
Last May, three Israelis
(and 11 travelers from other
countries) were killed when
their minibus crashed into a
truck and tumbled down an
embankment in the Bolivian
jungle.
There are also many close
calls. Hundreds of young
Israelis were in Thailand
during the recent bloody
crackdown, including dozens
who were staying in the
guest houses on Bangkok's
Kowson Road, which was
caught up in the mayhem.
They got out safely, though,
heading from the city as fast
as they could.
Only a very few Israeli
travelers stay abroad for
good. The rest come home,
maybe have another foreign
adventure or two, then get a
job, spouse and kids and set-
tle into the straight life.
"But it changes them for the
better," said Mr. Limon, 36,
who's been all over. "It
opens their minds." ❑
