the anchor, "and have made
a lot of money at it."
She asserted that ABC
called Israel "the Jewish
state" when Iraq was laun-
ching Scud missiles against
it during the Gulf War, and
called it "Israel" when it
,,was bombing Lebanon in
1982.
Mr. Jennings answered
;]
that ABC News policy bans
calling Israel "the Jewish
state," and that the net-
> °work's news division
receives an equal amount of
mail from pro-Israel and pro-
' Arab viewers saying it
favors the other side.
Saul Landau interjected
that one label the main-
> - stream press never uses for
Israel is that it is the "one
example of post-World War
II settler-colonialism in the
world. It could then be corn-
pared to South Africa,
although the majority/minor-
- ity situation would be dif-
ferent."

,

Mr. Hitchens, responding
to a question about the

media's demonization of
Saddam Hussein, urged the
American-Arab community
to "have less self-pity.
Saddam Hussein was every-
ithing the Administration
said he was. The only
criticism I have of the press
was that it didn't put this
out before."
Most questions were
lobbed at me. I was not the
lone Jew on the panel —Mr.
Solomon and Mr. Landau
are also Jews. But I was the
only Jew who was a working
journalist, and the only one
whom the audience ap-
parently assumed was a die-
hard Zionist-apologist-
expansionist-imperialist.
Within 50 minutes, I had
to defend Israel as the only
democracy in the Middle
li East; explain that I thought
mainstream press coverage
of the region had been over-
' whelmingly pro-Israel until
about 20 years ago and was
- now becoming more even-
handed; and that the situa-
tion in the Middle East is
"ripping apart the souls" of
both the American Jewish
and American Arab corn-
munities.
'
The questions seemed to
get more hostile as the
minutes ticked by, and some
audience members asking
them seemed to be engaging
in a penchant for stereotyp-
ing: Arabs equal good; Jews
equal bad.
The irony was that these
Ii questions were coming from
members of an ethnic group
rightly concerned about the
media's occasional
stereotypical portrayal of
them, and, especially, about
