"We only require an open mind and a willing- ness to learn." Stepping Stones, which originated in Denver in 1985, is made possible through a grant from the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit and the Max M. Fisher Founda- tion. The program is open to children between ages 5 and 18. Parent orientation will be on Sept. 20 and Oct. 4 at Temple Emanu-El in Oak Park. Classes begin 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 25, at the temple. There is no tuition. The course is structured around holiday, synagogue and life-cycle events, Mrs. Abramson said. Two or three sessions will be devoted to the High Holy Days; one or two on Sukkot, and one in- cludes a Simchat Torah pa- rade. There is a unit on the syn- agogue, its symbols and prayers; a unit on Shabbat and Jewish home symbols; sessions on Israel, Bible and history; and a unit on Passover, including a seder. "We are looking for ways these families can become affiliated," Mrs. Abramson said. "We're looking down the road because we don't want these children to grow up not knowing about their ° Judaism, feeling alienated and not a part of the Jewish 1-- community." Mrs. Sadler is often asked how she can work in Jewish education, yet be part of an interfaith marriage. Mrs. Sadler teaches four days a j week at Temple Israel. "I'm honest with my ,) students, always," she said. 1 "Intermarriage can happen to anyone. I feel secure in my Jewish foundation not only , to teach it, but also to live it." Mrs. Sadler, mother of two children, ages 3 and 1, said Stepping Stones would be a wonderful vehicle for her family when her children are older. "It educates and informs without proselytiz- ,,, ing," she said. "It will teach families about Judaism in a non-threatening at- mosphere." c'H Mrs. Sadler said all inter- faith couples make com- promises. She and her hus- band settled their religious issues before they got mar- ried. "We agreed to have a Jew- c: ish home and raise our chil- dren as Jews," Mrs. Sadler said. "Since then, my hus- band has come a long way, learning more and more _ about Judaism." Last year, the Sadlers celebrated two nights of Passover with her parents. ---/ "Judaism is a big part of my life," Mrs. Sadler said. "I ° never left that." ❑ . 7a-• 1/010&/.0 GLASS Storm Doors SOUTHFIELD 24055 W. 10 Mile Rd. Mirrored Walls Bi-Fold Mirrored Doors Coupon good for any or all products. One coupon per purchase.
