multi-level piers, restored col-
onial buildings with modern
boutiques, outdoor cafes,
boats and restaurants galore.
For those with ethnic ap-
petites, the South Street Sea-
port, with its food courts in
the Fulton Market and also
on Pier 17, offers plenty of
kosher franks, knishes,
bagels, falafel.
Besides the liveliness and
the good food, the seaport of-
fers varied vistas of the water-
front. My favorite is from the
top deck of Pier 17. Seated in
a deck chair, I could enjoy a
dramatic, close-up view of
Brooklyn Bridge, its intricate
suspension cables gleaming
in the sunlight.
The bridge is not only a

marvel of engineering — and
a beautiful sight — but a
visual reminder of yet
another journey made by New
York's Jews. After they lived
in crowded tenements on the
Lower East Side, they often
crossed the river to Brooklyn
to live 'in brownstones or
apartment buildings on wide,
tree-lined streets.
From Ellis Island to
Brooklyn Bridge, from Bat-
tery Park to the South Street
Seaport, my waterfront
adventure was not only a
refreshing way to enjoy New
York in summer, but also a
way to retrace the journey of
the Jews whose first view of
the city was also from the
water.

Stockholm, the view is
striking. There's the
sight of the looming City Hall
surrounded by boats, and of
castlelike buildings and tall,
dense trees, their branches
reflected in water.
The capital of Sweden is
often known as the Venice of
the North. It is actually a city
on 14 islands which are
spread out on Lake Malaren.
While there are no Italian
gondolas, ferries are as plen-
tiful as buses.
One of Europe's most

beautiful capital cities, Stock-
holm is serene and sophis-
ticated. With more museums
than any European city ex-
cept London and Paris, it also
has spacious public parks,
vast woodlands which sur-
round the city center — and
the special mystique of a city
that seems to float on water.
It also has special sight-
seeing highlights for the
Jewish traveler, including a
synagogue that's a national
historic landmark, a relative-
ly new Jewish museum, and
a Jewish community center
that reflects the active
cultural life of Jews in this
northern city.
