The most sensitive units are still off-limits to Druse — 'who may well have relatives in the Syrian and Lebanese armies, thus complicating their status as security risks — but Arens has brought them into the Navy and cer- tain intelligence units, and ' °has said he sees no reason why they can't become Air Force fighter pilots. When young Druse men return to Beit Jann after :7) three years in the army, they are likely to sign up as ---,- professional soldiers, ' policemen or prison guards; there are few other jobs for them in the village or near- by. ,, Jamal Salalha, head of I Beit Jann's municipal coun- cil, lists his hometown's woes: over 20 percent unemployment, open sewage I in the streets, no water or electricity in one out of every six homes, no heating in many of the schoolrooms, not enough schools or sports facilities. Asked why he thought the Druse had traditionally been shunted aside from govern- ment attention, Mr. Salalha said, "Maybe Israelis thought we were closer to the Arabs than to the Jews. But we feel like Israelis. There has to be a change in policy towards the Druse, not because we have fallen soldiers but because it's due us. We fulfill all our respon- sibilities, and we deserve all our rights."
