Under the supervision of Council Of Orthodox Rabbis
more likely to hold office in a
non- Jewish group than in a
Jewish one (21 percent vs. 17
percent).
As might be expected, the
stronger someone's Jewish
identity, the more likely the
person is to affiliate with
i' Jewish organizations, accor-
Th ding to the study; those who
are in-married, belong to a
c synagogue, attend services,
and are more religious are
t---iikeliest to affiliate.
There is "a very strong
association" between one's
I_ religious observance and
membership in Jewish
,-_organizations, said Rosen.
I Orthodox Jews are more
-likely than Conservative
Jews to participate in Jew-
' ish organizations, and Con-
, servative Jews are more
likely than Reform Jews and
those who claim no de-
nominational affiliaition,
the survey found.
By and large, according to
the study, people who belong
to Jewish organizations
belong to non-sectarian
groups as well. "There are
- belongers in this world and
a non-belongers," explained
Rosen.
The survey was conducted
by Market Facts, Inc., a na-
tional research company, in
February 1991. The 1,114
responses came from 1,600
surveys sent to self-
identified Jewish members
of the company's consumer
--mail panel.

Greek Court
Sentences Six
Athens (JTA) — Two Pa-
lestinians were sentenced to
life imprisonment and four
, others jailed for up to nine
and a half years for the 1991
bomb blast in Patras that
killed seven people.
The convictions marked
.the first time the Greek au-
thorities have been able to
break a terrorist network of
any kind.
An Athens court used the
anti-terrorist law to
sentence Ibrahim Bairat, 29,
„,and Abu al-Nubani, 27, to
life-plus-25-years for the ter-
rorist explosion that oc-
curred when a bomb intend-
ed for the British Consulate
in Patras went off pre-
maturely.
The blast wrecked the of
4Ib
fices of a private mail com-
p a ny and killed four
employees, two customers
and the Palestinian carrying
the bomb.
The court found the defen-
dants guilty "because as
leaders of the Islamic Holy
War Movement group, they
were responsible for the at-
tack."
