A member of the Andover
varsity football team as a
junior and senior, Hamburger
played offensive guard and
outside linebacker last fall,
when he served as a team
tri-captain.
He was the Barons' fourth-
leading tackler with 61 stops
including 32 solo efforts, and
his 10 tackles for losses total-
ing 51 yards ranked him No.
2 on the squad.

Hamburger made the All-
Southeastern Michigan
Association (SMA) Honorable
Mention list at outside
linebacker.
Andover's 6-3 record was its
best since 1982. The Barons
finished 5-2 in the SMA, good
for second place behind unde-
feated Birmingham Seaholm.
After enjoying that team
success in the fall, Ham-
burger had some individual
accomplishments the rest of
the school year
He finished 20th in the
100-meter breast stroke in
the Class A state swimming
meet. He was a member of
Andover's 4x800-meter relay
team in track which placed
fourth in the Class B state
meet.
There's no doubt, however,
that football is the sport clos-
est to his heart.
"I loved the atmosphere, the
comraderie with the guys,
playing the games," Ham-
burger said. "Also, because
- you put so much time and ef-
fort into football, success
becomes that much more
gratifying."
Hamburger has been play-
> ing football since he was an
eighth-grader at West Hills
Junior High School in Bloom-
field Hills, so there's sure to
be some withdrawal pains
this fall.
"There's no doubt about
that," he said. "My friend Rob
Wirthlin, who also was one of
our captains last fall, talks
about that all the time.
"One of Rob's older brothers
who played football at An-
dover said when you come
back for a game and see other
guys playing, it's a weird feel-
ing because you're only a
spectator now.
"I do realize, however, that
it's time for me to move on,
even though part of me still
wants to play football so bad-
ly."
Before he does move on,
Hamburger will get one more
chance to make his presence
felt on the football field.
He'll pick up his scholar-
ship at Spartan Stadium and
receive the customary ap-
plause. Then he will head to
U-M, leaving behind a game
that has helped lead his life
in the right direction. ❑
