ith the Olympic
Games scheduled to
open tomorrow,
sentiments are strong
among Israel's 45 athletes
and their coaches they will
return from Barcelona with
Israel's first-ever Olympic
medal.
"For too long, Israelis have
been conditioned to failure
in the international arena,"
said Uri Afek, director gen-
eral of the Israel Olympic
Committee. "Returning
home from Barcelona with
at least one Olympic medal
will provide national morale
with a much needed boost."
Hopes for an Israeli medal in
gymnastics rest on the
shoulders of Ron Kaplan,
who will be the team's sole
gymnastic representative,
according to Israel Olympic
Committee officials. At the
world championships held
last September in In-
dianapolis, Kaplan missed
making the semi-finals by
less than a point. Kaplan's
coach is his father.
Yael Arad, winner of this
year's French Open in judo,
is another strong contender
for a medal. A student at Tel
Aviv University, Arad is
credited, along with her
teammate Oren Smodga, for
bringing judo to the public
spotlight in Israel.
Many of Israel's Olympic
team members are Russian
immigrants, including a
contingent of three
weightlifters. More than 40
national records in Israel
were shattered last year by
these immigrants. Entered
in the weightlifting competi-
tion will be Reuven
Hadinatov, Oleg Sadikhov
and Andrei Danisov.
In all, Israel will be repre-

sented in 10 Olympic sports,
including track and field,
swimming, tennis, fencing,
shooting and yachting.
The athletes will be ac-
companied by Israeli
bodyguards, as they are dur-
ing every international
competition since the
Munich massacre of 1972.
Twenty years ago, 18-year-
old sprinter Esther Roth
captivated Israelis and Jews
worldwide when she reached
the 100-meter semifinals in
Munich. The excitement was
shattered by the tragic
murder by Arab terrorists of
11 Israeli athletes and
coaches, including Roth's
coach, Amitzir Shapira.
Afterward, Roth returned to
Israel with the remainder of
the Israeli team without
competing in the semifinals.
In 1976, however, in Mon-
treal, she made it to the
finals, finishing sixth
overall.
"One outstanding Olympic
achievement will do much to
mask the pain of 20 years
ago," Afek said. "It would be
nice to have something to
dedicate to our athletes (who
died)." To make the team,
the athletes must not only be
among their sport's top com-
petitors in Israel, they must
pass Olympic qualifying
times and or earn points dur-
ing world events leading up
to the Olympics.
Israeli sports are not im-
mune to the steroid con-
troversy experienced by the
rest of the sports world. Two
Russian immigrant
brothers, Igor and Uri Dan-
dik, weighlifters who were
Olympic hopefuls, were
caught using the drug to
strengthen their muscles
and were banned from com-
peting.
