Court of Appeals.

udge Helene White be-
lieves a Jewish back-
ground is well suited for
a judicial position.
"Our history is one of laws
and justice. The whole Torah
is law. In some respects it
isn't different from the laws
we have in this country," said
Ms. White, currently a Wayne
County Circuit Court judge
who is running for a vacancy
on the Michigan Court of Ap-
peals.
"The Jewish community is
generally concerned about re-
spect for law, concern for jus-
tice, and the application of
laws," Ms. White said. "I
think these are important
qualities for a judge to have."
Ms. White, 37, is one of nine
candidates vying for a vacan-
cy on the Court of Appeals
created by the retirement of
Judge Joseph Sullivan.
William Cahalan, Michael
Callahan, John Gillis, Renee
Loridas, Martin Maher, Ed-
ward Plawecki, Cynthia
Stephens, and George Ward
are also competing for the po-
sition.
The Michigan Court of Ap-
peals hears cases on appeal

after they have been heard in
the lower courts.
Ms. White believes she has
the necessary "background
experience, intellectual ca-
pacity, and diligence to do a
good job."
Ms. White has been a
Wayne County trial judge for
almost 12 years. She was
elected to Common Pleas
Court in 1980 where she
served as a district judge for
two years. In 1982, she was
elected to Wayne Circuit
Court and reelected in 1988.
Because of the volume and
backlog of cases heard by the
Court of Ap-
peals, she
thinks fresh
ideas on ad-

ministrative matters are nec-
essary to keep the court run-
ning smoothly.
One idea she would like to
take to the Court of Appeals
is a settlement docket, a pro-
cedure where case settle-
ments could be discussed on
the appeals level and an at-
tempt to resolve matters out
of court.
She is also advocating a
sentencing review procedure,
in which the sentence is only
reviewed instead of ap-
pealed.
