Ordained at the Seminary,
Rabbi Nelson served con-
gregations in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil, and Baltimore, Md.,
prior to coming to Detroit.
He is a past president of the
Conservative Rabbis of Me-
tropolitan Detroit and the
Michigan Board of Rabbis.
Locally, he is affiliated with
the Greater Detroit Interfaith
Roundtable of the National
Conference of Christians,
Muslims and Jews; Jewish
Community Council, South-
field Public Schools and Total
Living Commission and De-
troit Area Council of the Boy
Scouts of America.
He is also associated with
the Anti-Defamation League
of B'nai B'rith, State of Israel
Bonds, United Synagogue of
America, Rabbinical Assem-
bly, MERCAZ and Jewish Na-
tional Fund.
Rabbi Nelson is the chap-
lain for the Southfield and
Detroit Police Departments.

Zedek has appointed Rena
Weintraub associate director
of its Beth Hayeled Nursery
School. The newly created
position is based on the in-
creased enrollment at both
the synagogue and Shaarey
Zedek's newest facility, the
Eugene and Marcia Apple-
baum Beth Hayeled Building
and Jewish Parenting Center.
Ms. Weintraub was a
member for nine years of the
teaching staff at Shaarey
Zedek Beth Hayeled. For the
last four years, she served as
director of the Ann Arbor
Jewish Community Center
pre-school. She holds a com-
bined Bachelor of Science
degree in elementary educa-
tion and special education,
and an early childhood en-
dorsement from the State of
Michigan.
