Ms. Nudel, who is in Turin to promote the Italian edi- tion of her autobiography, was awarded honorary citizenship of the city in a ceremony. At the chimer following the ceremony, five members of the Italy-Israel Association stood up and walked out, claiming they could not sit at the same meal with depu- ty mayor Marziano Mar- zano, a socialist. The group has long main- tained that Mr. Marzano is anti-Israel, but there also appeared to be a strong dose of local politics surrounding the incident. "We will not eat with any enemy of Israel, which is what Marzano has demon- strated himself to be," said Angelo Pezzana, president of the association, who is also a Turin city council member from a party opposing Mr. Marzano's. "Out of respect and in an evening in which the guest is a person who fought for 17 years, held in Siberian camps, in criminal mental hospitals, to defend the rights of Jewish compatriots, this person (Marzano) cannot be at the same table. Either he goes or we do," Mr. Pez- zana said. According to the Turin newspaper La Stampa, Mr. Marzano left the room, but was convinced to return by Mayor Giovanna Cattaneo "out of respect for the guests." Mr. Marzano refused to comment, saying only that he was "bitter" over the in- cident. Mr. Pezzana told reporters he had warned the mayor before the dinner that if Mr. Marzano attended the dinner, his group would leave. He said that Mr. Marzano had for a long time shown his hostility to Israel in his writings and in his political positions. "We told the mayor that if Marzano was at the dinner, we would leave. He did not want to recognize this, and for us it was not an incident, but a provocation," Mr. Pez- zana said. He said his group had al- ready walked out once in the past when Mr. Marzano had been at a ceremony honoring Rome's Chief Rabbi Elio Toaff. "If Marzano, after the clash over the Toaff visit, had apologized, we would have put it in the past. But given the fact that he called us 'rabble' since we didn't want to sit at the same table with him, we will take him to court," Mr. Pezzana said. Call 354-6060 Tel Aviv (JTA) — Hun- dreds of dwarfs suffering from an ailment named after Tel Aviv University Pro- fessor Zvi Laron, can be cured now with a hormone produced in Japan and tested by Laron in Israel. Mr. Laron, Marsh Pro- fessor of Endocrinology at Tel Aviv, reported his fin- dings following two years of tests. He said the drug, IGF-1, enabled children suffering from Laron type dwarfism, or LTD, to grow by 3-5 in- ches. All the children who received IGF-1 grew and Mr. Laron has concluded that the disease is finally curable. Some 250 people are known to be suffering from Laron type dwarfism, and 41 of them are in Israel. LTD was first diagnosed among Jews of Middle East- ern origin and later among Jews and non-Jews in other Middle Eastern and Mediterranean countries, as well as descendants of migrants from those coun- tries. The disease is characteriz- ed by dwarfism, obesity, small hands, feet and faces. The liver fails to produce the hormone that causes growth and people with LTD reach a height of 3-4 feet. Mr. Laron said that his studies had led Fujisawa Co. of Osaka, Japan, to produce a biosynthetic hormone, IGF-1, which was first tested in Israel. That hormone is ad- ministered daily before breakfast, in doses that de- pend on the child's weight. It makes the children taller.
