NEWS Dr. Jerald Gach Remark Upsets Zimbabwe Jews New York (JTA) — Leaders of the Jewish com- munity of Zimbabwe have written to President Robert Mugabe, protesting a "derogatory statement about Jews" he is reported to have made last Friday, the World Jewish Congress re- ported. Muriel Rosin, president of the Central African Jewish Board of Deputies, the WJC national affiliate in Zim- babwe, said the letter asked for clarification from Mugabe and requested a meeting with him. According to published reports, Mr. Mugabe's remarks were made during a visit to peasant farming re- gions in western Zimbabwe. The peasants apparently complained that white ran- chers were refusing to allow their livestock to graze on private lands, despite drought conditions in the area. "Commercial farmers are hard-hearted people — you would think they were Jews," local newspapers quoted Mr. Mugabe as say- ing. Mr. Rosin told the WJC that the Jewish community was "horrified and distressed" by the reported remark. Zimbabwe has a Jewish population of under 1,200, divided between the cities of Harare, the capital, and Bulawayo. Vaclav Havel Resigns Post Prague (JTA) — A golden era for Jews in Czechoslovakia may have ended this week as President Vaclav Havel stepped down from office after a tenure that lasted only 935 days. Mr. Havel resigned on the eve of the imminent dissolu- tion of a 74-year-old union between Czechs and Slovaks and the collapse of the fed- eral government that ruled over the federation. A majority of Slovak members of the new federal parliament refused earlier this month to re-elect Mr. Havel and the Slovak Na- tional Council, Slovakia's parliament, declared the re- public's independence. The playwright-president led his country's "Velvet Revolution" against Com- munist rule in 1989, and left the presidential palace with promises not to be gone from public life for too long.
