Islam Issue

The Anti-Defamation
League has asked Washing-
ton to correct what it con-
siders a government en-
dorsement of the Nation of
Islam and its leader, Min-
ister Louis Farrakhan.
The issue involves con-
tracts with Nation of Islam
security firms to protect
residents of federally sub-
sidized low-income housing
projects.
Of such a contract in Los
Angeles, the ADL has asked
why federal money indirect-
ly supports a group it labels
racist and anti-Semitic.
"It is no more appropriate
for the Nation of Islam to get
federal money for working in
a multi-racial project than it
would be for the Ku Klux
Klan, said David Lehrer,
ADL's Los Angeles regional
director.
Mr. Lehrer said the con-
tact is part of a national
push by the Nation of Islam
to win federal contracts.
ADL also doubts whether
the security firm is an equal
opportunity employer, a re-
quirement for government
contractors.
ADL officials raised these
objections in a letter to
Housing and Urban Devel-
opment Secretary Jack
Kemp. Mr. Kemp has in-
dicated that HUD had "no
statutory role to play in
making this choice, other
than to review the selection
process to ensure that fed-
eral contracting procedures
are followed."
ADL plans to pursue the
issue with HUD, and
possibly appeal to key mem-
bers of Congress.

having its first rabbinic
member this week.
But in the end, family con-
siderations and the nearness
of the September primary in
New York convinced Rabbi
David Saperstein not to
throw his hat in the ring for
the seat held by retiring
Rep. Raymond J. McGrath.
Rabbi Saperstein heads
Washington's Religious Ac-
tion Center of Reform
Judaism, an affiliate of the
Union of American Hebrew
Congregations.
Last weekend, he received
favorable assessments of his
chances in the Republican-
leaning district. But in the
end, the idea of sacrificing
his personal life convinced
Rabbi Saperstein to resist
political temptation.
