day night at Adat Shalom
Synagogue.
The event was sponsored
by the Jewish Community

Council of Jewish Women,
and United Jewish Appeal
Young Leadership Cabinets
in cooperation with Adat

It didn't take long for
fireworks to erupt at the
podium and in the crowd. On
stage were GOP candidates
Judge Alice Gilbert, State
Sen. David Honigman and
Joseph Knollenberg. The
Democrats included Walter
Briggs and Dr. Michael
Meyer.
In recent weeks, the cam-
paigns of Sen. Honigman
and Judge Gilbert had
resorted to fingerpointing
and condemnation. Both
Sen. Honigman and Judge
Gilbert were derided by au-
dience members at two
separate times during the
forum. Judge Gilbert was
booed when she insisted that
she wasn't running a
negative campaign, that she
had been involved in 22
campaigns and never once
resorted to negative cam-
paigning.
"I'm the recipient of
negative campaigning," she
said.
Sen. Honigman said he
prided himself in not being a
"bitter person." He hoped
hard feelings would turn to

civility once the campaign
was over.
The senator would later
bring the boo birds back__„
when he discussed his posi=
tion on the abortion issue.
.
"I think that abortion is
wrong," he said. "I don't like
it, but many of my best j
friends have had abortions. (=-
Many decent women have
them."
The senator said he,
favored a parental conseit
policy within the first five /-
months of pregnancy; after
that time frame he opposed
abortion. He also said
government should not funs'
abortions, that government
