kashrus and Shabbos, etc.,

to the "modern" (ie: non-
Jewish) world, sincere Or-
thodox Jews will continue to
hold true to the immutable
laws of our eternal Torah.
It is only the integrity of
our belief which has allowed
the Jewish people to survive

ensure the continuance of our
people in the future.

meet Nelli. He knows that we
presented three Jewish
families to Nelli's social
workers, who were considered
along with the Orzechowskis,
that one of the Jewish
families was chosen for Nelli,
and that the two Jewish
families we sent who wen-2,
turned down felt no need to
make a court case of it.
They understood that many cj
factors are taken into account
in finding the best adoptive,_
family for any child and that
the fact that a family ex-
presses interest in a par-
ticular child may not?
necessarily mean that they
will be given custody of that `.11
child.
Most importantly, Rabbi
Jaffe knows that the Jewish
home where Nellie is now
thriving was selected, among
other things, because both
parents were particularly
well-equipped to deal with
the multiple daily medical
procedures that Nelli under-
goes on a regular basis. Had
that not been so, perhaps the__
Orzechowskis would have
been chosen.
The fact that this par-
ticularly well-equipped fami-
ly was also Jewish is a
wonderful plus for Nelli, and
a gift from Hashem, and
should be applauded, rathei
than sneered at.
Most importantly, we do not
understand why Rabbi Jaffe
or the Orzechowskis felt it
necessary to turn the whole
situation into a media event
with no apparent concern fol-
what might be the conse-
quencesto Nelli.

Comparing Bush
To Clinton, Gore

Thank you for Gary
Rosenblatt's opinion article
July 17 regarding George
Bush. As a result of his record
against Israel, every Jew in
the country, even the
Republican ones, should be
doing everything in their
power to see that George
Bush is not re-elected!
In contrast, the Democratic
Party and their candidate,
Bill Clinton, have come out
with a platform and une-
quivocal statements suppor-
ting the Jewish state.
Jerusalem is declared the
capitol of Israel and loan
guarantees are to be granted
for the absorption of im-
migrants without qualifica-
tions as to where they are
settled.
Another marvelously war-
ming emotional aside is that
Tippy Gore, the vice presiden-
tial candidate's wife, has been
a long-standng active mem-
ber of Congressional Wives
for Soviet Jewry and Peace

How about giving them
something they'll never ask for.

Bless 'em.
It seemed as soon as they could talk,
they started asking you for the moon. And as sure
as the sun rises in the east, you were there to provide it.
Well now you can give them something that's truly
out of this world. . . a subscription to The Detroit Jewish News.
And when they ask you how come? Tell them
that The Detroit Jewish News is the largest Jewish weekly
in the nation. And that every week award winning
journalists write about national and international events with
caring and sensitivity. Or, that The Jewish News is the
best way to find out about local and community news.

After all these years of giving your kids the sun,
the moon and the stars, give them something that
will enrich their world. The Detroit Jewish News.
You couldn't ask for a better gift.

We want to thank you for
the wonderful article by
Elizabeth Applebaum about
the Jewish Children's Adop-
tion Exchange in the July 10
Jewish News. We appreciate
your bringing the issues so
cogently to the attention of
your readership and the
generous way in which you
advised them of our organiza-
tion's endeavors.
We do feel, however, an
obligation to respond to some
of the comments of Rabbi Hir-
shel Jaffe in reference to the
case of Nelli K.
Rabbi Jaffe knows perfectly
well, after speaking with us
some months ago, that the
JCAN was asked to locate a
Jewish family for Nelli K.
more than a month before the
Catholic couple, the
Orzechowskis, were invited to

Baker Ends
Israel Visit

Jerusalem (JTA) — Secre-
tary of State James Baker=
left here with Israelis con-
vinced they would soon get
long-awaited guarantees
from the United States for
billions of dollars in loans ,)
needed for immigrant ab-
sorption.
Differences between the
two countries remain, most
notably over Prime Minister
Yitzhak Rabin's distinction
between "security" and
"political" settlements,
which Baker does not accept._
But Israeli sources say Mr.
Baker will nonetheless ad-,'
vise President Bush to grant
the loan guarantees, with an
announcement expected ear-
ly next month during Mr.
Rabin's visit to Mr. Bush's
vacation home in Maine.
