FRIDAY, JULY 24, 1992

away from Grishka and
scanned the line of convicts.
He pointed at me and hol-
lered, "Hey, you! Polski pan
("Polish Sir," which has a a
derisive connotation in Soviet
Russia), take the son of a
bitch back to the barracks."
He motioned to one of the
guards, who grabbed one of
Grishka's arms and shoved
him towards me. Back in the
barracks, I asked Grishka, --
"can you urinate?"
He looked at me. "What a
dumb question to ask me
now. You are crazier than me,"
he said.
"I am not crazy. Somebody
once told me that urine ster7 ,
ilizes. We have to wash your
wounds with something.
What do you have to lose?" I
said.
He shook his head in dis-
belief but proceeded to wash
the wounds with urine. I
ripped off strips from my-
linen shirt and twisted them
into tourniquets to stop the
bleeding. Fortunately, he had
only cut off the fingers above
the second joint. I put one
tourniquet on each of the
stumps to stop the bleeding.
Grishka recovered. A week
later, he was sent out to work
again. The guards gave him
only light work and rated his
production norm never less
than 75 percent. Norm was
100 percent fulfillment of an
assigned job and was re-
warded with 100 percent foot'- -
ration. Seventy-five percent of —
the norm equals 75 percent of
the food ration. Fifty percent
of the norm equals 50 percent -
of the food ration, etc. The
minimum was 30 percent and -
slow death by starvation.
Comparing what Grishka`
had lost against what he had
gained, the loss of three
fingers did not seem too high
a price to pay. 0
