hen Kenneth Gold
was asked to go to -- <
Germany as part of
a cultural exchange program
he did not jump at the oppor-
n
tunity.
Mr. Gold, a 31-year-old,
Farmington Hills attorney
and American Jewish Com-
mitteeboard member, was
one of a handful of AJCom- c-=
mittee members chosen to
participate in last month's (:-
nine-day exchange program,
with the Konrad Adenauer '
Foundation, an arm of the ,_,,,
Christian Democratic Party
in Germany. The exchange c,
sent 10 Germans to the '
U.S. where they were hosted =,'
by the AJCommittee.
. "It was difficult to accept-)
the invitation because of the
German Jewish history," (-- 1
Mr. Gold said. "but I decided 1
to go because it is important
for Germans and Jews to
become acquainted and
learn about each other's
views. It's important for any
community including Jew-
ish Americans to keep in
touch with Germany and es-
tablish ties so we know
what's going on over there."
Helene White, a 37-year-
old Detroit judge and
AJCormnittee member, also
participated in the program.
She said Germans have the --
notion Jewish Americans
generally do not trust them.
According to Judge White, the
Germans took advantage of
the AJCommitte program to
explain what the reunified
Germany is all about.
"I have no doubt about the
sincerity of the people who
run the country. They have a
firm commitment to democ-
racy. I think it is important -,
for the American Jewish
community and the rest of i-
the world to continue to be
encouraged by the future of
Germany," she said.
The nine-day trip allowed
Mr. Gold and Judge White to -p ,
meet Jewish leaders,
government ministers, high ,--=
school kids, and journalists
throughout the country and
took them to synagogues and
c-,
the camp at Buchenwald.
While traveling in Ger-
Mr. Gold did not see
any neo-Nazi skinheads, csI
and he said perceptions of 1
their activity is exaggerated
in America. However, he
said Americans must keep
an eye open for this type of
activity in Germany. ❑
