Piano Man
Continued from preceding page
premiered in 1991. It is based
on a book by Emery Reyes,
who explores ideas concerned
with building harmonious re-
lationships.
Sometimes Mr. Hamlisch is
surprised to learn where his
music is being performed.
"One of the unfortunate
things about my career or
about my life or about what-
ever, is that I'm usually the
last to know about anything
with my own music," he said
lightheartedly.
"For instance, I will get a
letter from somebody in Italy
who says, just saw A Cho-
rus Line in Italy,' but no one
will have told me it was in
Italy.
"For some reason, I'm out
of the loop when it comes to
my shows, and why it is I'm
not on a list that lets me
know when things are hap-
pening is beyond me."
So although he has traveled
to Israel, he does not know if
his shows have. He is able,
however, to keep careful track
of the more personal elements
of his life.
"I just had my third wed-
ding anniversary, and I think
marriage is just the best, par-
ticularly when it's to the right
person," said the husband of
Terre Blair, who has been an
independent TV producer/in-
terviewer.
Raised in a household that
combined Conservative and
Reform Jewish beliefs, Mr.
Hamlisch celebrated his bar
mitzvah and confirmation
and is convinced music can of-
fer a means of finding com-
mon ground for people of
different faiths.
"I believe that though it's
very important to have one's
heritage and be true to that
heritage, we have to break
down barriers between us as
opposed to staunchly putting
them up," he said. "Maybe
through all religions we can
all come together just because
it's the right thing to do.
"Music is an international
language, and I hope to con-
tribute to widening commu-
nication as much as I can." ❑
