London (JTA) — The em-
battled editor of the Sunday
Times of London, Andrew
Neill, remained unrepentant
this week over his con-
troversial decision to hire
one of the world's leading
Holocaust revisionists,
David Irving, to decipher the
diaries of Nazi propagandist
Josef Goebbels.
In an interview with the
London Jewish Chronicle, he
said simply, "It's my job to
get scoops."
"If that means upsetting
people, I'm sorry, but I have
no problems sleeping at
night," said Mr. Neill.
He attacked the Sunday
Times' competitors, par-
ticularly the Independent,
which revealed Mr. Irving's
role in securing the lost
Goebbels diaries from a
Moscow archive. He called
the paper "green with envy"
at being scooped by the Sun-
day Times and said it had
decided to make "a big deal"
out of the Irving "sideshow."
The diaries, which are to
be serialized in the paper in
corning weeks, and not Mr.
Irving, are the issue, accor-
ding to Mr. Neill.
Members of Mr. Neill's
own editorial staff expressed
dismay and embarrassment
at his actions, which includ-
ed a substantial fee for Mr.
Irving.

Rabin Deals
For Coalition
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Labor
Party leader Yitzhak Rabin
signed coalition agreements
last week with the Meretz
and Shas parties, giving him
a governing majority in the
Knesset.
The United Torah Judaism
bloc was expected to join the
coalition, and it looked as if
Tsomet would climb aboard
as well.
In any case, it is now clear
that Mr. Rabin will be able
to present a government to
the new Knesset.
With Meretz and Shas,
Labor now has a bare
majority of 62 in the 120-
seat Knesset. But it can also
rely on tacit support from
the two Arab parties, which
together hold five seats.
Tsomet would give Mr.
Rabin an additional eight
seats, and United Torah
Judaism would add four
more. If both parties join,
Labor will be able to govern
by a comfortable 74-seat
majority, insuring that no
one party can bring down
the government.
