Having 25 for
the holidays?

EVERYTHING YOU
IMAGINE AND MORE...

Mr. Cohen, speaking in
French as he leads the way
through the modern three-
story building.
Its facilities include two
large reception rooms, three
kosher kitchens, a chapel, a
large social room for the
Macabbee youth club and two
mikvahs, one for women,
another for men.
Besides all this, there's a
sports room where young peo-
ple play basketball, ping-pong
and other sports; and even a
separate social hall for par-
ties and disco dancing, com-
plete with strobe lights.
The synagogue was financ-
ed by Nessim Gaom, a
wealthy Sephardic Jew who
now lives in Geneva; and the
synagogue he helped build is
a visible reminder that the
Sephardic Jews of Geneva,
who are now 52 percent of the
Jewish population — are a
significant force in the city's
Jewish life.
Besides these two promi-
nent synagogues, there are
three others in Geneva. Beit
Gil is a liberal synagogue at
12 Quai du Seujet; Machsike
Hadass, an Orthodox con-
gregation, worships in rented
facilities at 2 Place des Eaux
Vives.
But wherever they worship,
the Jews of Geneva share the

facilities of the city's Jewish
community center. Maison
Juive, at 10 Rue Saint-Leger,
is right across from one of
Geneva's many parks and just
on the outskirts of the old
city.
The facilities here include
classrooms for a kindergarten
and Hebrew shcool and an ex-
tensive library of over 30,000
books. Most are in French,
but there are also volumes in
German, English, Hebrew,
Russian, Yiddish, Ladino and
Arabic.
From the offices in Maison
Juive, the community spon-
sors numerous cultural
events — concerts, lectures
and more. The community
also has helped with the
resettlement of the Soviet
Jewish families who have
settled here in recent years.
Education is another key
activity. The Talmud Torah
school has 250 students and
Geirsa, the Jewish day school,
has 100 students enrolled.
For the Jewish traveler,
there are other sights of in-
terest besides the synagogues
