I POLITICALLY SPEAKING I George Bush Democrats support Mr. Clin- ton. "It is amazing to find such a large percentage of Jewish Republicans backing Ross Perot," says NJDC Executive Director Steve Gutow. "There weren't that many Jewish Re- publicans to begin with. But after the '92 elections, they may be an endangered species." "This study illustrates the Jewish community's dissatis- faction with the Bush Ad- ministration," Mr. Gutow says. "It is not surprising to find Jewish Democrats sup- porting Gov. Clinton. He's ter- rific on issues that matter most to us — economic growth, health care, educa- tion and U.S.-Israel rela- tions." Jewish Republican leaders provide a different view. "Anybody who understands polling realizes that money spent now on polls is wasted because these campaigns are so volatile," says Matt Brooks, executive director for the Re- publican think-tank, the Na- tional Jewish Coalition. "These numbers will ab- solutely change. These num- bers are meaningless." Mr. Brooks says the study provides a "false sense of se- curity" for Mr. Gutow. "I find these comments of the NJDC totally irresponsi- ble and deceptive," Mr. Brooks says. "This is not a sci- entific cross-sampling of where the Jewish community stands on parties." And Mr. Brooks wants to give a piece of his own mind. "Just wait until I get start- ed bashing Bill Clinton. I think he is weak. President Bush has a far stronger record than Bill Clinton's rhetoric. "I am convinced that as re- lations between (Israeli Prime Minister) Yitzhak Rabin and Bush become evident, there will be a warming in the Jew- ish community, and we will regain support of the Jewish community," Mr. Brooks says. On the local side, Jim Alexander, Oakland County's GOP chairman, who is Jew- Bill Clinton ish, has a bit of advice for Jewish Democrats. "If I were a Democrat, I think I'd spend my time wor- rying about Jewish Democ- rats supporting Jewish Republicans Alice Gilbert and David Honigman, who both are running for Congress," Mr. Alexander says. "I haven't had many people saying they are leaving for Ross Perot, and nobody has said they are leaving for Bill Clinton," Mr. Alexander says. "While there is concern over the president's position on Is- rael, people are taking a wait- and-see attitude in light of the new Israeli government." ❑ HOW DOES 4-1/8% SOUND?
