Hillel Day School Executive
Director Robert Steinberg also
expressed support for the bill.
"The leadership of Hillel re-
mains committed to the concept
of the separation of church and
state, and all the ramifications
thereof," he said.
"However, we are mindful of
the great difficulty faced by
many of our families who require
economic assistance in sending
their children to Hillel Day
School. Our growing scholarship
commitment is evidence of our
response to this need.
"For these families and the
many new families seeking the
education Hillel Day School of-
fers, the availability of federal
grant monies from a properly ad-
ministered governmental pro-
gram would be welcomed," he
said.
The school voucher plan has
been proposed in the past, with
polls showing approval increas-
ing slightly over the years. A
1987 Gallup Poll found that 50
percent of the public approved of
the idea. In 1991, 56 percent of
those polled expressed support
for vouchers, with 39 percent in
opposition.O

Used Deception
Washington (JTA) — A
pro-Israel lawmaker this
week attacked the McDon-
nell Douglas Corp. for
waging a "deceptive cam-
paign" to win congressional
support for the sale of 72
F-15 advanced fighter air-
craft to Saudi Arabia.
The nation's largest
defense contractor has
mounted an intensive lobby-
ing effort, based on the claim
that thwarting the sale
would throw tens of
thousands in the aerospace
industry out of work.
At a news conference, Rep.
Howard Berman, D- Calif.,
called the effort "the most
sophisticated, far-reaching
campaign" to promote an
arms sale he has ever
witnessed as a U.S. repre-
sentative. But he said its
central message, that the F-
15s would be a virtual jobs
program for American
workers, is "outrageous"
and that the McDonnell
Douglas job figures are inac-
curate.
"The truth," said Mr.
Berman, surrounded by
representatives of arms con-
trol groups, is that
"worldwide demilitarization
and conversion to a
peacetime economy would
create far more jobs than
(having) the United States
continue as the premier
arms pusher to the develop-
ing world."
