Local Delegates

delegate.
"It is a good convention,"
Ms. Pollack said "It is quiet
with much less conten-
tiousness than there often is
at Democratic conventions.
People are strongly behind
Mr. Clinton and his plat-
form."
Ms. Pollack attended a
Peace Now meeting, where
Jewish activists discussed
the Yitzhak Rabin Labor
government in Israel.
"The feeling is that the
loan guarantees will be
granted and that is very
good news for Israel," Ms.
Pollack said. "The Clinton
campaign will focus on the
economic infrastructure of
Israel, which so sorely needs
help.
"Clinton and Labor will
work hand-in-hand," Ms.
Pollack said.
Most exciting for Ms.
Pollack was the party's ap-
peal for women.
"I was emotionally mov-
ed," said Ms. Pollack, who
has served in the state
senate for 10 years.
"Perhaps at last we will put
mothers as well as fathers
into decision-making posi-
tions in this country."
While delegates spent

countless hours at conven-
tion meetings, other Jewish
Democrats from Michigan
journeyed from speech to
speech, and they spent a bit
of extra time braving the hot
and humid weather in New
York City.
Faylene Owen, formerly of
Detroit, now a political con-
sultant in East Lansing, is
one of 120 members of the
convention's rules com-
mittee. The committee
designs format and regula-
tions during the national
party meeting.
She is co-chair of Mr. Clin-
ton's Michigan fund-raising
campaign. Her husband,
former East Lansing Mayor
Larry Owen, is fund-raising
chairman.
"The Jewish delegates in
New York are very excited,"
Ms. Owen said. "Bill Clinton
is the most pro-Israel can-
didate we have had in
years."
She did some shmoozing, a
little shopping and a lot of
politicking.
Also in New York for the
convention is former state
Commerce Director Doug
Ross, a member of the Dem-
ocratic Platform Com-
mittee.

Three Synagogues
Plan Merged School

ALAN HITSKY

Associate Editor

T

he impending closure
of United Hebrew
Schools after the 1992-
93 school year has led to the
tentative merger of the
schools of Congregation
Beth Achim and Congrega-
tion Beth Abraham Hillel
Moses. The agreement is ex-
pected to be ratified next
week.
Congregation B'nai David
has tentatively agreed to
join the other two when
school begins in the fall.
Classes will be held on
Monday and Wednesday
afternoons at Beth Achim
and on Tuesdays and Thurs-
days at Beth Abraham Hillel
Moses (BAHM). The same
teaching staff will work at
both buildings. On Sunday
mornings, classes will be
held from 9 to 11 at BA IM
and from 11 to 1 at Beth
Achim.
According to BAHM edu-
cation director Barry
Levine, prayers will be
taught during the last 30
minutes at BAHM and dur
ing the first 30 minutes at

Beth Achim to allow the
teaching staff to move from
one building to the other.
The joint school has estab-
lished member and non-
member tuition rates, accor-
ding to Sharon Silverman,
education committee chair.
The rates for the one-day
program (kindergarten
through 3rd grade) are $375
for non-members and $275
for members. For the two-
day program, $495 and $375.
For the three-day program,
$655 and $500. There is a
books and supplies charge
for all levels, and additional
fees for graduation and
bar/bat mitzvah training.
As a UHS branch, Beth
Achim had a majority of non-
member students, with a
number on scholarship. Mrs.
Silverman said the school
will not know until registra-
tion whether scholarships
will be available, but they
can be requested.
Beth Achim estimates 80
students will be returning
from its UHS branch. Mr.
Levine estimates BAHM
will have 195-205 students.
B'nai David had 10 students
