He was buried next to his brother, the Gerrer Rebbe, Grand Rabbi -israel Alter, known as the Bais Yisroel. The Gerrer Rebbe was the leader of the Gerrer Chasidic movement, and a leader of the Moetzet Gedolai Hatorah (the Council of Sages) of the ,-- gudat Yisroel. He held the position of leadership not on- Fly for his own Chasdic group, 1 but was also a major voice representing Orthodox Jewry. In 1977, at the age of 80, he assumed the mantle from his ate brother. The Rebbe's leadership was [ based on unification with other groups. He had a sharp mind and constantly showed his wisdom and his practical outlook. His outlook was very a broad and constantly expanding. Shortly after becoming the Rebbe, he started a revolution in Gur. The economic and social problems in Israel did not let him rest. He said many times he could not sleep as a result. When some young , followers died, he attributed it to pressures caused by feel- ing the need for luxuries. He was opposed to the debts caus- ed by fancy affairs, to living in expensive apartments in large and polluted Israeli cities, and to all other forms of fiscal irresponsibility and waste. rlb put his more austere life- style views into practice, he introduced the idea of creating Torah institutions in places such as Arad, Asdod and Hatzor where cheaper ac- commodations could be found. Though by nature polite, the Gerrer Rebbe was very strong-willed about anything that he felt was not right or just. This is a great loss, not only for Gur, but for all of us. The Council of Orthodox Rab- bis joins all of Israel in mour- ning the loss of this world leader. 0 Rabbi Grubner is director of the Council of Orthodox Rabbis of Greater Detroit. Abbe A.
