People who remember
> Ramone are calling for dinner
I reservations which he will be
',able to accommodate come
September . . . In the mean-
!
'iime,
folks like Asya
1
L Nisnevich, of Asya's Hair and
Nail Salon in Sunset Strip,
are thrilled to pieces at his be-
(-- ing there . . . It's the "shot in
the arm" this mall has
needed.
- CONGRATS . . . to Rose
and Mitchell Kent . . . on
;,-their 49th anniversary .. .
celebrated by a lot of winners
in Las Vegas who played the
numbers with glee as Rose
I threw the dice for almost a
half hour at the crowded crap
table.

'D
ALMOST 20 stores in the
successful Newbury Square
on Haggerty and 14 Mile,
but only one with the
foresight to think of tired
shoppers, especially the elder-
- ly, who enjoy a rest before go-
ing on . . . This is just one of
the reasons why Manhattan
Bagel and Deli Co., owned by
Dennis Lafter and Gary
'Seeker, has become so
popular.
It thinks of the homeless
also . . . At the end of each
day, bagels not sold are pick-
ed up for those aided by St.
i - Vincent DePaul Church, plus
community groups who re-
quest them.
Manhattan Bagel and Deli
is not your ordinary water
donut operation . . . Bagels
aren't made the traditional
-- way . . . Dennis and Gary
don't put the bagel dough in
boiling water . . . The holeys
are steamed and then baked
2 to retain the good flavor,
much like one would get from
steamed vegetables as oppos-
ed to boiling.
Opened Dec. 6, 1991,
HManhattan Bagel and Deli is
a carry-out with four tables
and chairs for people to eat in
a hurry . . . A large black-
' board tells of 24 sandwiches
on bagel, rye, whole wheat or
I white bread . . . Eight salads
, --are made fresh daily, as well
as the many flavored cream
cheeses, and jars of jelly from
I Petoskey line a counter while
) chubs of Vienna salami hang
in a back sector.
In all this there's a keyword
at the Dennis Lafter and
Gary Becker bagel and deli
emporium . . . freshness .. .
The fellows dote on its impor-
tance . . . and there's little
better in the world of food con-
sumption than the knowledge
of this significant factor.
A LOT OF local history
went to the highest bidders
recently as a crowded Frank
Boos Gallery on Orchard
Lake Road auctioned off Hy
Vogel's wonderful caricature
collection that hung on the
former London Chop House
walls . . . A catalog with the
pictures sold for $15 and
many old Chop • customers
gave Hy a big ovation as he
was introduced from the
audience.
The famous one of Jimmy
Durante in two parts brought
$800 . . . $400 for the nose
and $400 for the rest of his
face . . . Alfred Hitchcock rak-
ed in the largest bucks,
$1,200.
Hy watched as the big
dollars bought caricatures of
the famous who sat for him
. . . and for which the house
paid Hy from $25 to $35.
Bill Kennedy was auction-
ed for $700; Susan Hayward,
$575; Walter Pidgeon, $385;
Milton Berle, $575; Henry
Youngman, $475; Pat
O'Brien, $200; Steve Allen,
$475; Rex Harrison, $425;
Roslyn Russell, $425; John
Barrymore, $625; and so
many more among the almost
300 framed masterpieces .. .
He did one of Emmett Kelly
who came into the London
Chop House without his
makeup, which Hy proceeded
to put on from memory with
astounding likeness of the
famous clown . . . It sold for
$475.
Hy's Southfield apartment
is loaded with clown pictures
that he has drawn in water-
color . . . All are for sale .. .
Call him at 353-8082 . . . and
own part of a true legend in
this town.
REMINDER COMES
from Belle Englander about
her late husband Jules
Englander also being among
the founders in 1947 of the
West Side Tennis Club .. .
"He met originally with Dr.
Joe Curhan and Dr. L. Hud-
son Rosenthal," says Belle,
who recalls that after several
meetings they bought the pro-
perty and, until enough
members were recruited,
Jules helped finance the pro-
ject . . . "My husband and the
others formed the club
because no Jews were allow-
ed to join the then Detroit
Tennis Club . ."
DOES ANYONE know a
cleaner who specializes in
French cuffs? . . . Shirts cost
so much nowadays, say so
many gents, it would be well
worth the extra dough to have
them done right. ❑
