California and Italian wines
grace the menu of this
upscale eatery. Buddy Budson
Trio and Ursula Walker
entertain with jazzy blues
Thursday, Friday and Satur-
day evenings. R.I.K.s is open
for lunch Monday through
Friday 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m., for
dinner Monday-Wednesday 5
p.m.-10 p.m., Thursday-
Saturday 5 p.m.-11 p.m., Sun-
day 5 p.m.-9 p.m.
Tucked in Orchard Mall is
long-time Chinese favorite
Rikshaw Inn (6407 Orchard
Lake Road). Mostly Can-
tonese fare is on this menu
with a few Szechuan special-
ties to start the stomach fires.
There is a full bar. Rikshaw
Inn is open Monday through
Thursday 11:30 a.m.-10:30
p.m., Friday and Saturday
11:30 a.m.-11 p.m. and Sun-
day 4 p.m.-10 p.m.
Walk outside the mall due
north and find competitor
Golden Phoenix (6257 Or-
chard Lake Road). A running
waterfall greets customers
along with the aroma of sweet
and sour fish and barbequed
spare ribs. The Golden
Phoenix is open Monday-
Thursday 11 a.m.-9:30 p.m.,
Friday 11 a.m.-11 p.m., Satur-
day 11:30 a.m.-11 p.m. and
Sunday noon-9:30 p.m.
Next door, the taste and feel
of Europe permeate Paparaz-
zi Ristorante. Italian music,
marble-look posts, and simple
wood and metal chairs pro-
vide a modern continental
feel, complementing the
pasta, chicken, veal and sea-
food entrees. Nothing more
than $12.50 on the menu; full
bar. Paparazzi is open for
lunch Monday-Saturday
11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., for din-
ner Monday-Thursday 5
p.m.-10 p.m., Friday and
Saturday 5 p.m.-11 p.m. and
Sunday 4 p.m.-9 p.m.
You don't have to be a
Pistons fan to enjoy Chuck
Daly's Great Northern. Of
course, it doesn't hurt. The
new kid on the block serves
up real American cuisine at
real American prices. Bean
soup, broiled Lake Superior
whitefish, and meat loaf are
popular according to Dennis
Brinker, president of Sign of
the Beefcarver Corporation.
An outdoor cafe and a non-
smoking dining room (smok-
ing is permitted in the bar)
have helped keep Great Nor-
thern busy since its January
opening. Creating the feel of
Charlevoix or Traverse City
just minutes from home was
part of the goal of the
establishment, Mr. Brinker
said. So where's the fudge?
Great Northern is open
Monday-Saturday 11 a.m.-
midnight (Kitchen closes at
10 p.m.), Friday and Saturday
11 a.m.-1 a.m. (Kitchen closes
at 11 p.m.) and Sunday 3
p.m.-9 p.m.
Manuel's (4301 Orchard
Lake Road) places a gourmet
touch on less-than-traditional
Mexican-Spanish fare. No
greasy tacos here — instead,
quesadillas stuffed with phea-
sant, char-grilled veal with
tomato, garlic and cilantro
and Norwegian salmon in
pepper sauce. Reservations
are recommended as the
crowd is as upscale as the
food; full bar. Manuel's is
open Tuesday and Wednesday
11 a.m.-10 p.m., Thursday and
Friday 11 a.m.-1 a.m., Satur-
day noon-1 a.m. and Sunday
4:30 p.m.-9 p.m.
Hoa Kow (4343 Orchard
Lake Road) is the newest ad-
dition to the Crosswinds
Mall, located directly across
from Manuel's. Fifteen com-
bination plates line the menu
in addition to a wide assort-
ment of Cantonese, Mandarin
and Szechuan main and side
dishes; full bar. Hoa Kow is
open Monday-Wednesday 11
a.m.-9:30 p.m., Thursday and
Friday 11 a.m.-10 p.m., Satur-
day noon-midnight, Sunday 2
p.m.-9 p.m.
Across the street, the
Village Place (4170 Orchard
Lake Road) can satisfy a late-
night craving any time. Open
24 hours a day, this family-
style restaurant is home to in-
somniacs, high school kids
and after-church families
alike. Most of the waitstaff
has been there for years and
is quite adept. The place is
perfect for the post-bar mun-
chies, late-morning hangover
or simple power breakfast.
