The strip of Or-
chard Lake Road
from 14 Mile Road to just
north of Lone Pine with all its
traffic congestion can be a
gastronomical delight. From
Oriental cuisine to Middle
Eastern, from Italian fare to
Ethiopian, Orchard Lake
Road is an international food
gallery.
Here's a guide to some of
West Bloomfield's finest
restaurants on the culinary
corridor.
At the corner of 14 Mile
Road, the Robin's Nest Plaza
is home to both elegant
eating and quick lunches.
Sultan's (7295 Orchard Lake
Road) offers Middle Eastern
cuisine with a twist. Stan-
dards like baba gannoush —
mashed eggplant, lemon
juice, tahini and olive oil;
stuffed grape leaves and
falafel — fried patties of
ground chickpeas, fava beans,
parsley and onions; are serv-
ed up respectably. Seasoned
for the more adventurous
eater are lamb tongue and
charbroiled quail. According
to the waitstaff, rack of lamb
remains Sultan's biggest
seller. Prices range from
$2.95 for appetizers to $22.50
for the lamb. Sultan's boasts
a full bar and is open Mon-
day-Thursday 11 a.m.-11 p.m.,
Friday 11 a.m.-midnight and
Sunday 4 p.m.-10 p.m.

Sultan's lies the home of

served all day, along with
hamburgers, chili, grilled
cheeses, Greek salads and
onion rings — perfect for the
one-hour lunch sprint. Tino's
is open Monday-Saturday
from 7 a.m.-8 p.m.
Jack and Harriet Gold-
berg's Stage and Co. (6873
Orchard Lake Road) is less
than a mile down the road; it
offers some of the hugest
sandwiches in town. The
theater motif the owners
started at the Oak Park loca-
tion carries on in the north-
west suburbs with the Shirley
Eder salad — a basic tossed
with carrots, cucumbers,
radishes, mushrooms and
green peppers; Fiddler on the
Roof — Nova Scotia lox and
cream cheese; and an Annie
— swiss and muenster
cheeses, coleslaw, tomato and
Russian dressing. Alcohol is
available. The cast and crew

Across the street, in West
Bloomfield Plaza, lies a
friendly rival, Deli Unique
(6724 Orchard Lake Road).
Glass partitions and comfy
blue and black booths give
the deli an upscale look se-
cond only to its food. Deli Uni-
que dishes out much of the
same traditional delicatessen
delights as across the street.
Be sure to check out the mat-
zah ball soup — the ball is as
big as a closed fist but goes
down the throat with a lot
more ease. Deli Unique is
open Monday-Friday 11
a.m.-11 p.m., Saturday 9
a.m.-11 p.m. and Sunday 9
