try, from the economy to
race relations, can be solved
by one dynamic leader. The
rest of us have acknowl-
edged that America is in
decline.
Is Mr. Perot a mirage? A
prominent Israeli official, in
a private conversation, sug-
gested that Mr. Perot may
prove to be supportive of
Israel because he is perceiv-
ed to be a take-charge leader
who would appreciate
Israel's steadfastness in
asserting itself in a hostile
Mideast.
That may very well be
true, but it is worrisome that
we must make decisions
based on hunches rather
than facts. And some of us
are deeply concerned about
Mr. Perot's approach to
governance. As Rabbi Ar-
thur Schneier, rabbi of the
Park East Synagogue in
Manhattan, wrote last week
in a cautionary piece about
Mr. Perot, "the free Ameri-
can people are not just cor-
porate employees who need a
tough boss to tell them what
to do."

Not surprisingly, Ameri-
can Jews, who cherish the
concept of democracy, hay*

been less supportive of Mr.
Perot than members of any
other religious group, accor-A
ding to a CBS poll in June. 11
So this strange campaign
stumbles on and, with fo
months until the electio
we are wary of each of the
three would-be presidents: of
Ross Perot because we ,don't
know how he'd act; of George
Bush because we do know
how he'd act; and of Bill
Clinton because we doll
know if he is an act.
But we can only judge peo-
ple by what they say and
what they do. So far, Mr.
Perot has avoided saying
what he'd do, and Mr. Bush
has avoided doing what Iv
says. That leaves Mr. Cling"
ton, who has been saying the
right things.
As we watch Mr. Clinton
at the Democratic conven-
tion this week, I'll keep in
mind the words of the Zoha4 ;
a 13th-century Kabbalistic
text, which instructs: "From
a man's mouth you can tell
who he is." ❑

Jewish paper, I was disturbed
by the following: The main
feature in that issue was the
Israeli elections. To my sur-
prise, a large part of that ar-
ticle was devoted to corn-
ments by leaders of Arab
organizations.
These people have been
working tirelessly against
Israel. A major recent activi-
ty has been efforts to stop the
aliyah of Soviet Jews (whose
vote apparently tipped the
scale in favor of Labor).
Why do you legitimize the
interference of such enemies
in Israeli affairs? If, for
whatever reason, you decide
to quote them, you owe it to
your readers to inform them
what these people stand for;
that what they mean by
"peace" is Israel's surrender.
Instead, you even highlight
Mn. .Mokhiber's distortion of
what Mr. Rabin had said.
We get enough of this kind
of balderdash in the general
press.

Perot Opposes
School Prayer '

Washington (JTA) —
Texas billionaire Ross Perot
who has remained vague on
many issues, came out for
the first time in opposition to
prayer in school.
"If it's going to disrupt the
school system," said Mr.
Perot, "let's do it at homl
and when you get to school,'
let's stick to the strong
moral and ethical standards
that create a great society."
Mr. Perot touched on
several other issues in the
90-minute question-and ,
answer show, including his
views on Iraqi leader
Saddam Hussein.
"Slam that (oil) embargo
in on that guy hard and let
him twist in the wind," said
the maverick candidate.
